MCA Cross Border Advisors

Canada

Remote | Full-Time, Permanent

MCA Cross Border Advisors is a specialized financial planning, tax and investment firm helping Canadians and Americans navigate the financial and tax implications of living and moving between Canada and the United States.

We are growing our Tax Team and are looking for a Canadian Tax Manager to join our team.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Canadian tax professional who wants to work on complex personal tax matters in a specialized cross-border environment.

About the role

As Canadian Tax Manager, you will prepare and review Canadian tax work for MCA clients and provide technical support on Canadian tax matters. You will work closely with MCA's Planning and Investment teams, as well as other members of the Tax Team, to understand the client's complete financial situation and ensure that Canadian tax considerations are appropriately addressed.

This is a hands-on technical management position focused on the preparation and independent review of complex Canadian individual income tax returns, Canadian tax compliance, and tax planning matters.

The successful candidate will be a trusted technical resource within our Tax Team, responsible for identifying and resolving complex tax issues, reviewing work prepared by junior team members, and ensuring that files are completed accurately and efficiently.

This role is particularly well suited to an experienced tax professional who enjoys technical work and wants to contribute directly to the quality and development of a growing tax practice.

Responsibilities

- Independently review complex Canadian individual income tax returns, ensuring technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable legislation.
- Prepare and review Canadian tax returns involving foreign income, foreign assets, investment income, capital gains, rental income, and other complex personal tax matters.
- Identify Canadian tax implications arising from cross-border situations,

including changes in tax residency, immigration, emigration, and foreign-source income.
- Research complex Canadian tax issues, interpret relevant legislation and CRA guidance, and develop technically supportable recommendations.
- Identify potential tax planning opportunities and compliance risks.
- Review working papers and supporting documentation, ensuring that conclusions are clearly documented and files meet established quality standards.
- Provide technical guidance, constructive review notes, and training to junior tax professionals.
- Collaborate with the US Tax Team, Financial Planning Team, and Investment Team on matters affecting shared clients.
- Manage multiple client files and competing deadlines while maintaining high standards of accuracy and responsiveness.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of internal tax review procedures, technical resources, and workflows.
- Identify Canadian tax issues arising from clients' cross-border circumstances.
- Support Canadian tax planning and compliance engagements.
- Work closely with financial planners and other advisors.
- Review client information for completeness and consistency.
- Prepare clear, organized and well-supported working papers.
- Identify missing information and follow up appropriately.
- Draft client and internal correspondence.
- Monitor changes to Canadian tax rules and filing requirements.
- Contribute to the development of Tax Team processes and procedures.
- Provide guidance and support to Associates and Preparers.
- Manage multiple files and deadlines, particularly during tax season.

Qualifications

Required:

- Approximately 5–8+ years of progressive experience in Canadian taxation, including substantial experience with complex individual income tax returns.
- Demonstrated experience independently reviewing Canadian personal tax returns prepared by other tax professionals.
- Strong technical knowledge of Canadian personal income tax legislation, compliance requirements, and related CRA guidance.
- Proven ability to identify technical issues, conduct independent tax research, and develop well-supported conclusions.
- Experience managing complex files through completion with limited supervision.
- Robust analytical, organizational, and written communication skills.
- Ability to provide clear, constructive feedback and technical guidance to junior team members.
- Post-secondary education in accounting, taxation, finance, or a related field.

Preferred:

- Canadian CPA designation.
- Completion of, or progress toward, the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program.
- Experience with Canadian international tax matters, including foreign tax credits, foreign asset reporting, tax residency, and departure/arrival tax considerations.
- Experience working with clients who have financial connections to both Canada and the United States.
- Previous experience in a public accounting or professional tax advisory environment.

What makes someone successful at MCA? You are technically strong, organized and curious.

You take ownership of your work and deadlines, but you also understand that successful cross-border tax work depends on collaboration. You are comfortable asking questions, researching unfamiliar issues and clearly documenting your conclusions.

You don't need to know everything. You need to know how to find the answer, support it and communicate it.

Target start date: December 2026 to February 2027

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
