Canada
Canadian and/or US Tax Expertise | Remote | Full-Time, Permanent
MCA Cross Border Advisors is a specialized financial planning, tax and investment firm helping Canadians and Americans navigate the financial and tax implications of living and moving between Canada and the United States.
We are growing our Tax Team and are looking for a Cross Border Tax Manager to join our team.
Our integrated approach brings together professionals across Tax, Financial Planning, and Investment Management to help clients navigate the complexities of cross-border financial decisions.
As our firm continues to grow, we are expanding our Tax Team and seeking an experienced Tax Manager with strong technical expertise in Canadian and/or US individual taxation.
About the role
We are looking for a technically strong tax professional who enjoys complex individual tax matters, independent tax return review, and solving challenging problems.
This position offers the opportunity to work with clients whose financial and personal circumstances involve both Canada and the United States.
Candidates do not need to be equally proficient in Canadian and US taxation. We welcome professionals who have developed substantial technical expertise in one jurisdiction and have meaningful exposure to, or a demonstrated interest in, cross-border taxation.
The successful candidate will be expected to independently review complex tax returns within their area of expertise, identify and resolve technical issues, and support the development of junior tax professionals.
Responsibilities
- Independently review complex Canadian and/or US individual income tax returns,
depending on technical expertise and experience.
- Identify tax compliance issues, reporting obligations, and planning considerations arising from Canadian and US financial connections.
- Analyze tax matters involving foreign income, investments, tax residency, cross-border employment, foreign tax credits, and international reporting requirements.
- Conduct technical tax research, interpret relevant legislation and administrative guidance, and develop supportable conclusions.
- Identify potential tax planning opportunities and compliance risks.
- Review working papers, supporting documents, and technical analyses for accuracy and completeness.
- Provide technical guidance, constructive review notes, and mentorship to junior tax professionals.
- Collaborate with Canadian and US tax colleagues to address issues requiring expertise in both jurisdictions.
- Work closely with Financial Planning and Investment Management professionals on integrated client matters.
- Manage complex client files and competing deadlines with a high degree of independence.
- Contribute to improvements in tax review procedures, quality control, and technical knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
Required:
- Approximately 5–8+ years of progressive experience in Canadian and/or US taxation.
- Strong technical expertise in individual income tax compliance in at least one jurisdiction.
- Demonstrated experience independently reviewing complex personal income tax returns.
- Experience identifying and resolving technical tax issues, conducting research, and documenting supportable conclusions.
- Strong analytical skills and professional judgment.
- Ability to manage complex tax files with limited supervision.
- Experience providing technical guidance or review feedback to junior tax professionals.
- Robust organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Post-secondary education in accounting, taxation, finance, or a related field.
Preferred:
- Canadian CPA, US CPA, or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation.
- Completion of, or progress toward, the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program.
- Experience working with clients who have financial connections to both Canada and the United States.
- Knowledge of Canadian or US international tax compliance and reporting requirements.
- Experience with cross-border tax residency, foreign tax credits, international investment income, or related planning matters.
- Previous experience in a public accounting or professional tax advisory environment.
