Job Overview The Custom Fabrication Fitter is responsible for fitting and assembling custom steel components from fabrication drawings. The role includes layout, dimensional checks, and tack/stitch welding to ensure each assembly meets drawing and quality requirements.

Reporting to the Welding Supervisor, the Fitter will work with structural steel, plate, and heavy custom fabrications. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently from fabrication drawings, resolve fit-up issues, and consistently maintain high standards of accuracy, workmanship, and safety.

Key Responsibilities

- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, dimensions, and tolerances to plan the layout and fit-up of custom steel assemblies.
- Lay out, fit, and assemble plate and structural steel components, including tack and stitch welding as required during fit-up.
- Check dimensions and alignment throughout fabrication using appropriate measuring and layout tools to ensure the work meets drawing requirements and specified tolerances.
- Prepare and adjust components for fit-up and welding using common fabrication methods such as grinding and beveling, and complete minor rework where required.
- Identify drawing discrepancies, material issues,



or fit-up problems and bring them to the Welding Supervisor before proceeding with the work.
- Use overhead cranes and proper rigging practices to safely move and position heavy steel components throughout the fitting and assembly process.
- Work closely with welders and other production team members to ensure fitted assemblies are ready for final welding and the next stage of production.
- Accurately clock in and out of assigned work orders while following established shop procedures for production tracking.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area while following OHSA requirements, company safety procedures, and proper PPE practices at all times.

Required Qualifications

- Minimum 3 years of fitting experience in custom steel fabrication, structural steel, plate fabrication, or a similar heavy manufacturing environment.
- Strong ability to read fabrication drawings and weld symbols and complete layout and fit-up work independently.
- Hands-on experience fitting and assembling plate and structural steel components, including tack or stitch welding as part of the fitting process.
- Strong measuring and layout skills in both metric and imperial units, with experience using standard fitting and fabrication tools.
- Experience operating overhead cranes and using basic rigging practices, or willingness to complete required company training.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to identify and correct fit-up or dimensional issues while working to specified tolerances.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a production team while following established safety, quality, and shop procedures.

Assets

- CWB welding certification.




- Metal Fabricator (Fitter) trade certification or Red Seal endorsement.
- Forklift and overhead crane certification.
- Experience with large or complex custom steel fabrications.
- Knowledge of steel grades and plate materials used in heavy fabrication.
- Experience with JobBOSS² or another ERP/work-order tracking system.
