As Staff Software Engineer, Control Plane
As Staff Software Engineer, Control Plane, you will own the software through which administrators configure, govern, and understand the assembled stack. Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering, you will lead the architecture and hands-on implementation of the control-plane APIs, services, state models, workflows, and administrative experience. You will work at the control-plane level: the Platform Engineer will provide deployment and operational mechanisms, MLOps engineers will own the runtime components, and you will turn those capabilities into a coherent product.
Success in this role means
Success in this role means that administrators can manage the stack through reliable, secure, and understandable workflows for configuration, lifecycle, policy, tenancy, and system health, without needing to understand the implementation details of each underlying component.
Main Responsibilities
- Define and evolve the architecture, domain model, and interfaces of the control plane
- Build backend services, APIs, asynchronous workflows, and state-management systems for administering the stack
- Deliver administrative workflows for installation status, configuration, upgrades, rollback, policy, tenancy, and system health
- Build the supporting administrative interface where needed, with backend and distributed-systems engineering remaining the role's primary depth
- Own the adapters and integration seams through which the control plane configures and governs platform and AI runtime components
- Design for reliability, idempotency, auditability, access control, failure recovery, and safe operation across long-running distributed workflows
- Establish testing, observability, documentation, and release practices for the control plane, and participate in operating it in reference environments
- Evaluate and integrate open-source software where it meets product requirements, making build-versus-adopt tradeoffs explicit
- Lead consequential designs and implementations, set engineering standards, review technical work, and mentor other engineers without requiring formal management authority

About Mila
Founded by Professor Yoshua Bengio of the Université de Montréal, Mila brings together researchers specializing in artificial intelligence, and more specifically in machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning. Recognized worldwide for its important contributions to the field of deep learning, Mila has particularly distinguished itself in language modeling, machine translation, object recognition and generative models. Since 2017, Mila has been the fruit of a collaboration between Université de Montréal and McGill University, with close links to Polytechnique Montréal and HEC Montréal.
Position Summary
The Sovereign AI Lab is a new Mila initiative to assemble an enterprise-ready, open-source AI inference stack that organizations can deploy and operate on infrastructure they control. It brings together functionalities such as model serving, retrieval, agent orchestration, observability,
and a control plane to operate these components as one coherent product.
