Rightway Recruitment has partnered with Vaughan Ventures, a family-owned mechanical contractor based in Delta, BC, to recruit an experienced Lead Mechanical Estimator.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of the estimating function within a growing business, working across a range of commercial and institutional mechanical projects, including new construction, upgrades, renovations and tenant improvements.
Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, you will lead estimating and tendering while also helping Vaughan strengthen its estimating systems, processes and procedures. The role is well suited to a hands-on estimator who understands the field, can produce accurate and competitive estimates, and wants the autonomy to make an impact within a smaller, collaborative team.
The Role:
You will be responsible for managing estimates from initial tender review through to submission and project handover. This will include reviewing drawings, specifications, addenda and tender requirements and completing detailed quantity takeoffs for plumbing, HVAC and complete mechanical packages.
You will obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor pricing, prepare complete estimates and tender submissions, and develop scope letters, clarifications and exclusions. Throughout the estimating process, you will identify scope gaps, constructability concerns, commercial risks and potential pricing opportunities.
Trimble AutoBid Mechanical is Vaughan's primary estimating platform. You will take ownership of maintaining and improving assemblies, labour units, material pricing, subcontractor pricing and historical cost information, while developing practical templates, checklists, workflows and quality-control procedures.
A key part of the position will be continuing to improve the estimating function. This includes tracking bid results, comparing estimated costs against actual project performance,
documenting processes and using lessons learned to improve the accuracy, consistency and competitiveness of future estimates. You will also have the prospect to evaluate supporting tools such as Bluebeam where they provide a practical benefit.
Collaboration & Project Handover:
Although you will have significant ownership of estimating, this is a collaborative role. You will work closely with the Operations Manager, Project Managers, field teams, suppliers and subcontractors to manage tender priorities and maintain visibility over active opportunities, deadlines and estimating capacity.
Bid/no-bid decisions and final pricing will be reviewed jointly with management. Before submission, the assigned Project Manager will be involved to review scope, execution strategy, schedule, risks and major assumptions.
Following a successful award, you will lead a structured handover alongside the Project Manager, transferring estimate details, quotations, labour allowances, assumptions, exclusions, risks and opportunities. You will remain available to clarify the estimate and support Project Managers with change-order pricing, scope revisions and additional project-related estimates when required.
What We're Looking For:
The successful candidate will bring a combination of mechanical field knowledge and estimating experience, ideally including:
- A recognized plumbing trade qualification and practical mechanical field experience.
- Approximately 3–5 years of mechanical estimating experience in British Columbia, with experience estimating plumbing,
HVAC and complete mechanical packages across commercial and institutional projects.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, labour requirements and installation methods, with the ability to accurately interpret drawings, specifications, addenda and tender documents.
- Experience using mechanical estimating software; direct experience with Trimble AutoBid Mechanical is highly valued.
- Strong organization, attention to detail and communication skills, with the ability to take ownership, manage changing priorities and follow through consistently.
- A valid driver's licence.
Experience with Bluebeam or similar digital takeoff tools, established relationships with BC mechanical suppliers and subcontractors, and exposure to both new construction and occupied-building renovations would be considered strong assets.
The Package:
This is primarily an office-based position in Vaughan Ventures' Delta office, with reasonable flexibility depending on workload and business requirements. Site walkthroughs, project reviews and meetings will be required periodically, with travel throughout the Lower Mainland when needed. A company vehicle will be available for work-related travel.
Vaughan Ventures offers
- $100,000–$140,000 salary, depending on experience.
- Employer-paid comprehensive medical and dental benefits.
- Group RRSP matching.
- Vacation in accordance with company policy.
- Training and professional development opportunities.
- Company-provided cellphone.
- Company events and team-building activities.
This is an opportunity to step into a key position within a growing mechanical contractor, take genuine ownership of the estimating function and help shape how the department operates moving forward.
