We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Plant Manager / Manufacturing Operations Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of our Cambridge manufacturing and equipment assembly facility.
Our operation combines metal fabrication, welding, hydraulic and electrical assembly, equipment modification, and the inspection and preparation of imported industrial lift trucks.
A significant part of our business involves receiving specialized industrial equipment from overseas manufacturers, completing modifications and final assembly, testing equipment, and preparing finished products for customer delivery.
We need a strong, practical manager who can organize production, lead a team of approximately 10–15 employees, solve problems, and ensure equipment is completed correctly and on schedule.
This is a hands-on management position, not a desk-only administrative role.
Key ResponsibilitiesShop Operations & Production Management
- Manage the daily operation of our Cambridge manufacturing and assembly facility.
- Supervise and coordinate approximately 10–15 employees involved in fabrication, welding, mechanical assembly, electrical and hydraulic work.
- Establish daily and weekly production priorities.
- Assign work, monitor progress, and ensure equipment is completed on schedule.
- Improve shop organization, workflow, productivity, and labour efficiency.
- Identify production bottlenecks and implement practical solutions.
- Maintain quality standards throughout manufacturing and assembly.
Imported Equipment Processing & Final Assembly An important responsibility of this position is overseeing the preparation of industrial lift trucks and equipment received from our overseas suppliers.
- Coordinate the receiving and inspection of imported industrial lift trucks and equipment.
- Identify shipping damage, manufacturing deficiencies, and required modifications.
- Organize and supervise final assembly,
modifications, and equipment preparation.
- Coordinate installation of hydraulic power packs, electrical controls, batteries, chargers, and other components.
- Ensure equipment is properly tested and inspected before shipment.
- Work with our engineering and technical teams to resolve equipment issues.
- Establish consistent procedures for equipment inspection, testing, and final quality control.
Fabrication, Welding & Mechanical Assembly
- Oversee metal bending, welding, fabrication, and mechanical assembly activities.
- Ensure employees have the drawings, materials, components, and instructions required to complete their work.
- Monitor workmanship and ensure compliance with engineering specifications.
- Coordinate fabrication and assembly requirements for custom-engineered equipment.
- Reduce unnecessary rework, delays, and material waste.
Employee Leadership
- Provide direct supervision and leadership to shop employees.
- Establish clear expectations for productivity, workmanship, and accountability.
- Train, coach, and develop employees.
- Participate in hiring and performance evaluations.
- Maintain a positive, organized, and professional working environment.
- Ensure safe working practices and compliance with workplace safety requirements.
Qualifications We are looking for someone with proven manufacturing leadership experience and strong practical mechanical knowledge.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in manufacturing, industrial equipment, machinery assembly, fabrication, or a related industry.
- Previous experience managing a manufacturing shop or production team.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate 10–15 or more employees.
- Strong understanding of mechanical assembly, welding, fabrication, and industrial equipment.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, electrical controls, and industrial machinery.
- Experience with industrial lift trucks, forklifts, or specialized material handling equipment would be a significant advantage.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Robust production scheduling, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to make decisions independently and take ownership of daily shop operations.
- Good communication and leadership skills.
- Experience improving production efficiency and quality control.
A mechanical engineering, industrial technology, or skilled trades background would be an asset, but a university degree is not required. We place greater value on proven shop management experience, practical technical knowledge, leadership ability, and results than on formal qualifications alone.
What We Offer
- Competitive annual salary of $100,000–$125,000, depending on experience.
- Performance-based bonus opportunities.
- Profit-sharing program.
- Employee benefits package.
- Full-time, permanent employment.
