Production Baker
Koru & Crust Pie Co. | Niagara Region, Ontario | Full-time
Primarily Monday-Friday, with occasional weekend work based on production and seasonal demand.
About the Role
Koru & Crust Pie Co. is a growing bakery specializing in handcrafted New Zealand-style savoury pies, pastry and baked goods. We are looking for someone with a strong foundation in pastry and baking who wants to become an significant part of a small, growing bakery.
This is not a pastry-only position. We want someone who is interested in learning and participating in the whole production process - making pastry, preparing and cooking savoury fillings, sauces and other components, assembling and baking pies, making desserts, and finishing, packaging and labelling products.
You will work closely with our Bakery Manager and owners as part of the production team, while also being expected to work independently, take ownership of your work and see production tasks through from start to finish.
There is repetition in the role because consistency is essential in a production bakery. At the same time, we are still developing products and improving how we work, so there is real opportunity to be creative, test recipes, contribute ideas and help make our products and processes better.
What You Will Do
Prepare and work with pastry for savoury pies and other baked products.
Prepare, cook and portion savoury fillings, sauces, vegetables, meats and other recipe components.
Assemble, bake, cool, finish, package and label products for retail and wholesale production.
Produce desserts and sweet baked goods as required.
Follow recipes, portion standards and production procedures to maintain consistent quality.
Participate in recipe testing and product development and contribute practical ideas for improvements.
Work independently on assigned production while communicating and coordinating with the Bakery Manager and Owners.
Support ingredient preparation, basic butchery and portioning tasks as trained.
Maintain clean, organized and food-safe work areas and follow sanitation, allergen, storage and FIFO procedures.
Help wherever needed as production priorities change in a growing bakery.
What We Are Looking For
Pastry and baking knowledge is important for this position, gained through culinary/pastry school and/or relevant professional bakery experience.
A genuine interest in pastry and baking, with the ability to produce accurate and consistent work.
Interest in the savoury cooking side of the bakery, including meats, vegetables, sauces, stocks and pie fillings. Cooking experience is an asset, but we are happy to teach someone who wants to learn.
A desire to understand and eventually be capable of working across the entire production process rather than only one station.
Strong attention to detail, organization and pride in the finished product.
Comfortable with repetitive production work and understands that consistency and creativity are both important.
Works well as part of a small team but is equally comfortable working independently and taking ownership of assigned work.
Positive attitude, reliability, curiosity and willingness to contribute ideas.
Able to follow established recipes and standards while also being interested in recipe development and improvement.
Comfortable working on your feet for extended periods and able to lift up to 40 lb.
Food Handler Certification, or willingness to obtain it.
The Person Who Will Thrive Here
You enjoy being part of a team, but you do not need someone standing beside you to keep you moving. You notice what needs to be done, take responsibility for your work and care about getting the details right. You are comfortable repeating a process until it is consistent, but you are also curious about how a recipe or process could be better.
We value attitude, curiosity and willingness to contribute just as highly as experience. We want someone who wants to learn the whole bakery, share ideas and grow with the business.
What Success Looks Like
Production is completed accurately, efficiently and on time.
Pastry, fillings and finished products meet our quality and consistency standards.
You can increasingly take ownership of production tasks with less supervision.
You communicate well, contribute positively to the team and help solve problems.
You continue developing skills across pastry, baking, cooking and production.
Workstations remain clean, organized and food-safe.
Growth Opportunity
As Koru & Crust Pie Co. grows, this role can grow with it. We want to develop people who are interested in learning more of the business, taking on greater responsibility and contributing to product development and production leadership over time.
