Paid contract: research coder (remote, short contract, casual hours, November 2026 to February 2027)
Empathia Learn Technologies Inc. is an early-stage Ontario company that builds communication training for paramedics. We are contracting up to four people from this posting to code short written sentences against a written coding manual: two coders, a reserve who is trained and paid only if called in, and one person who is later asked to review the items where the coders disagree, for a separate flat fee. The coding is part of a study the company runs on its own materials.
This is a fixed-term independent contract, not employment.
The work
- About 4 hours of training in the week of November 9, 2026, ending in a practice round. Paid coding starts once your practice round meets the manual's standard.
- Up to about 13 hours of coding between November 2026 and February 2027: up to 10 batches of 50 items, each with a set due date, at hours you choose. You may decline any batch, and the company may offer fewer batches.
- Remote, on your own computer, working only in accounts and folders the company provides.
Pay
- Pay is per batch, not per hour: $25 per accepted batch of 50 items, up to about $325 in total over four months, November to February. That is about $20 an hour at the expected pace of 75 minutes per batch. If the practice round shows the items take longer than expected, the batch fee is raised before paid coding starts.
- Training payment: $40 when you complete training and the practice round, plus $35 when your practice round meets the manual's standard ($75 in total). This is paid to you.
- A batch is accepted when it is complete and follows the instructions. If it does not, it comes back to you to fix. Batch payments never depend on which codes you choose.
- Paid by electronic transfer within 7 days after each batch is accepted, plus GST/HST if you are registered. You invoice as an independent contractor and handle your own taxes. You never pay anything to take part.
Who we are looking for
- You read carefully, follow written rules exactly, and ask when a case is unclear rather than guessing.
- Excellent written English.
- Experience with research coding, annotation, transcription, editing or research assistance is an asset, not a requirement.
- No paramedic or health care background is needed.
- You can commit to the training week and the full period.
Conflicts of interest To keep the study independent, these people cannot hold this contract: practising or retired paramedics and emergency medical responders; paramedic students; people who work for, contract with or volunteer for an organisation the company works with or sells to; anyone who has used or helped make Empathia Learn's training; and anyone with a personal tie to the company's founder. The full list is in the application questions. Anyone who learned of this contract through a school course, a professor or a school mailing list cannot be engaged. The work is never done for course credit or through any school's accounts or equipment.
Confidentiality
Before you see any material you sign a confidentiality and services agreement.
The materials stay confidential, the codes you produce belong to the company, and no material may be entered into an AI tool or any other online service. Your coding is recorded under a coder code, never your name.
To apply
Apply on Indeed by October 30, 2026. A resume is not required; the questions take about five minutes. We reply to every eligible applicant by November 3, 2026.
Pay: $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 4.0 per week
Application question(s)
- Are you 18 or older?
- Do you live in Canada, can you work as an independent contractor (invoicing the company and handling your own taxes), and do you have a Canadian bank account for payment?
- Are you now, or have you ever been, a paramedic or emergency medical responder (PCP, ACP, CCP, EMR or equivalent, anywhere)?
- Have you ever used Empathia Learn's training or the demo on its website?
- Do you know Sandra Trejo, the company's founder, personally: family, friend, current or former coworker, or someone you have studied or worked alongside? Only knowing her name does not count.
- If selected, will you do this work only on your own computer, in the accounts the company provides, never through a school or employer account, device or course, never for course credit, and never in any AI, translation or other online tool?
- Did you learn about this contract through a university or college course, faculty member, staff member or mailing list?
- List every organisation you currently work for, contract with, volunteer for or study at, or write "none". We check these against the organisations the company works with; most answers are fine.
