About Rising Stars Tutoring
Rising Stars Tutoring is a small, local tutoring team that has served Greater Victoria for four years. We provide one-on-one support for students from Grade 4 through early university, with a particular focus on math and science.
Our goal is not simply to help students finish the question in front of them. We help students understand their courses, prepare for tests, and develop a repeatable way to approach problems when they are stuck.
That requires tutors who listen carefully, identify the real misunderstanding, adapt their explanations, and create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.
What you’ll do
- Provide one-on-one tutoring, primarily in person in Victoria, with some online sessions.
- Support students in one or more subjects, especially math, physics, or chemistry.
- Prepare for each student’s course, level, and current learning needs.
- Identify why a student is struggling instead of simply completing the question for them.
- Adapt your pace, explanations, examples, and practice to the student in front of you.
- Help students prepare for tests by strengthening both their subject knowledge and their approach to unfamiliar questions.
- Build professional, encouraging relationships with students and families.
- Communicate reliably about your availability, accepted assignments, and any concerns affecting a student’s support.
- Maintain accurate session records and complete required administrative follow-up.
What we’re looking for You do not need to be a certified teacher.
You do need to care deeply about helping students learn and be able to turn strong subject knowledge into clear, patient explanations.
Strong candidates will
- Have strong knowledge in at least one relevant subject or course level.
- Be especially comfortable teaching math, physics, or chemistry. Biology, statistics, English, and other subjects may also be considered.
- Notice when an explanation is not working and try a different approach.
- Make it easier for students to admit confusion, attempt difficult work, and learn from mistakes.
- Be patient, adaptable, dependable, and qualified.
- Prepare before sessions when a course or topic requires review.
- Communicate clearly with students, families, and the Rising Stars team.
- Be honest about the subjects and levels they can teach confidently.
- Have tutoring, teaching, coaching, mentoring, or related experience. This is preferred, but demonstrated teaching ability matters more than a particular job title.
- Be interested in tutoring consistently rather than treating it as a very short-term commitment.
Requirements
- Based in Greater Victoria and able to provide in-person tutoring.
- Legally able to work in Canada.
- Reliable access to a computer and internet connection for online sessions and administration.
- Able to provide dependable availability and arrive prepared and on time.
- Willing to complete an interview and a short teaching demonstration.
