About Blackbook AI
Blackbook AI is a technology consultancy working across AI, automation, data and digital. We started in Australia and our head office is still in Brisbane, but we've grown into APAC and North America over the past nine years, and that now includes a Calgary team we're actively building out. In that time we've delivered over 2,000 projects for more than 180 clients.
We're a Databricks Consulting Partner, along with being a Microsoft Solutions Partner, an AWS Consulting Partner and a UiPath Diamond Partner. We hire locally because people who understand the market tend to do better work in it, and we back them with a global delivery team behind the scenes.
About the role
Blackbook AI is hiring a Senior Data Consultant to work on a long-term client engagement south of Calgary. You'll be the senior data person on the ground. You'll set direction, build and own pipelines, put good data practices in place, and coach the client's junior developers.
What you'll do
- Design, build and run data pipelines into and across SQL Server, including bringing in data from external platforms such as Snowflake
- Write, review and tune T-SQL: stored procedures, views, SQL Agent jobs and query performance
- Set and enforce data standards: naming, version-controlled schema changes, code review, testing, documentation, data quality checks and reconciliation
- Model data for operational apps and reporting, and clean up legacy structures as you go
- Mentor junior developers through pairing, code reviews and design discussions
- Act as a trusted advisor to client stakeholders: run discovery, explain trade-offs, push back when needed, and turn business rules into technical designs
- Use Python for data processing, automation and validation,
and support the Python-based internal tools
What you'll bring
- 8+ years in data engineering, database development or BI, with deep, hands-on SQL Server, T-SQL and SSMS experience
- A track record of building and supporting production data pipelines (SSIS, ADF, Python or similar)
- Working Python skills for data work
- Solid data modelling (relational and dimensional) and a real commitment to data quality, integrity and documentation
- Consulting or client-facing experience. You're comfortable leading conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring or leading junior developers
- Based in or around Calgary and able to work on-site south of Calgary regularly
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
Nice to have
- Snowflake, Azure DevOps or Git-based CI/CD for database changes
- Schema migration tools (SSDT, Flyway, Alembic or similar)
- Tableau, Power BI, Databricks or Microsoft Fabric
- Experience in agriculture, supply chain or other operations-heavy industries
Why Blackbook AI
- A permanent role with a consultancy that gives you real ownership on a long-running engagement
