Senior Engineering Manager, Applied AI
Location: Canada (100% Remote)
Type: Full-Time
Comp: $425K CAD Base + Equity + 4% RRSP Matching + Benefits A fast-growing, profitable AI company is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to build and lead a team delivering production AI systems for enterprise clients across different industries. Bootstrapped and generating eight-figure revenue, the company combines greenfield client projects with investment in its own AI platform, coding agents and knowledge infrastructure.
This is a player-coach opportunity for a solid software engineering leader who enjoys building, developing people and working directly with customers. You’ll begin hands-on within a client engagement, learning how the team builds agentic systems and where engineers need support.
From there, you’ll build and lead your team, shape technical decisions, own hiring and help improve delivery across engagements.
What You'll Do
- Start hands-on within a client engagement, building AI systems and taking solutions from initial discovery through production
- Hire, lead and develop engineers, including Senior and Staff talent, through clear expectations, practical feedback and coaching
- Develop senior engineers into effective technical leads who can independently own complex client projects
- Guide architecture, agent workflows, prompt design and evaluation approaches, balancing speed with reliability, security and maintainability
- Step into challenging technical and client situations, resolving unclear requirements, production issues and delivery risks
- Work directly with clients and business stakeholders to understand their needs, shape priorities and define what to build
- Plan staffing across engagements, matching engineers to projects and managing transitions ahead of time
- Own hiring for your team, from defining the technical bar and sourcing through interviewing and onboarding
- Turn lessons from client work into reusable tools, reference implementations and improvements to the company’s AI platform
- Partner with product and client teams to keep delivery aligned with customer needs and business outcomes
- Establish useful engineering practices while keeping processes lightweight and appropriate to the team’s needs
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, with strong technical depth across backend services, APIs, data systems and cloud architecture
- 4+ years managing engineers, including Senior and Staff engineers, with demonstrated success hiring and developing strong teams
- Hands-on Python experience and the ability to contribute directly to development, review designs and challenge technical approaches
- Willingness to begin embedded in client delivery, personally building systems before expanding your management responsibilities
- Experience delivering software in client environments and working directly with customers or senior business stakeholders
- A track record of building something from zero to one, whether a product, engineering team, technical practice or hiring process
- Practical understanding of LLMs, AI agents and evaluation, with curiosity about multi-agent systems and sound judgment about human oversight
- Fluency with AI coding tools and thoughtful approaches to reviewing and validating AI-generated code
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain trade-offs, navigate difficult conversations and make decisions under ambiguity
- A product-minded approach that connects engineering decisions to customer needs and measurable outcomes
- Experience in consulting, technology services or forward-deployed engineering would be a strong asset
Why Apply?
- Build and lead a team working on greenfield AI systems across different industries
- Join a profitable, bootstrapped company with eight-figure revenue
- Stay close to engineering while having meaningful influence over hiring, team development and technical direction
- Help shape a proprietary AI platform, coding agents and reusable infrastructure
- Work directly with clients and leadership on important business and technology decisions
- Join a high-trust, low-ego culture that values autonomy, constructive feedback and shared learning
- Enjoy sustainable working hours and a culture that protects weekends
- Work 100% remotely from anywhere in Canada
