Position Summary
Vertical Motion builds custom software for clients and develops AI-enabled products and engineering tools. This senior role centres on AI engineering, security, infrastructure and harness development: the software that gives AI agents context, tools, execution environments and reliable feedback. It combines ownership of internal engineering platforms with delivery and modernization of client production systems.
The role works directly with company leadership, client stakeholders, client developers and QA.
General Responsibilities
- Research, evaluate and select technologies and architectural approaches for recent and existing systems.
- Translate business and user requirements into technical specifications and system, data and integration architectures.
- Coordinate implementation and releases with company staff and client teams, including requirements, estimates and delivery planning.
AI Engineering and Harness Development
- Architect and maintain production AI applications using model-agnostic integrations that allow providers and models to evolve without substantial redesign.
- Build context management and grounding capabilities that give agents relevant information while preserving source attribution.
- Integrate agents with APIs, repositories and engineering tools using Model Context Protocol (MCP) or equivalent interfaces.
- Develop harness orchestration for tool execution, task state, cancellation and failure recovery, connecting agents to managed execution environments.
Software Intelligence and Supply Chain Security
- Develop software analysis services using relational or graph data models, with source parsing, indexing, search and dependency analysis across multiple languages.
- Integrate dependency inventories and vulnerability management tools, using package manifests and lock files to identify installed versions and track findings.
- Generate and process Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) using established standards, and integrate dependency analysis into repository and CI/CD workflows.
- Develop grounded AI-assisted code review, reporting and software analysis workflows through repository APIs, webhooks and other controlled integrations.
- Design measured experiments to evaluate AI and code-analysis approaches, document results and determine their suitability for production use.
Client System Development and Support
Deliver features across data, APIs, interfaces and background processing in assigned client systems.
- Develop business workflows for operational records, reporting, review, assessment and certification, including notifications and auditability.
- Implement multi-tenant applications, document processing, approval workflows and concurrency controls.
- Support subscription applications, payment processing, localized interfaces and associated mobile functionality.
- Integrate business services with reliable reconciliation and data or file synchronization, including change detection, version history, conflict handling and recovery.
- Modernize legacy applications while preserving business rules, integrations and system knowledge needed to make changes safely.
- Support desktop applications and external device integrations where required,
using vendor interfaces and appropriate diagnostic techniques.
Application Agent and Identity Security
- Implement authentication for users, agents and services using OAuth 2.0 and enterprise identity integration, with secure credential storage and rotation, token lifecycle management and replay protection.
- Verify role-based and resource-level authorization, least privilege, tenant isolation and permission-preserving delegation. Require appropriate human approval for sensitive agent operations and maintain attributable audit trails.
- Apply AI and application security controls, including schema validation, prompt-injection defenses, safe input and output handling, account privacy, secret management, rate limiting and protection against unintended resource access.
- Integrate authorized security testing, with approval for active scans and safeguards restricting them to non-production environments. Track findings through resolution; automated testing complements external manual penetration testing.
Infrastructure Release Engineering and Operations
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines with environment separation, automated checks and controlled promotion through development, testing, staging and production.
- Operate cloud services, databases, storage and Linux or Windows hosts using infrastructure as code, secure network configuration and monitoring. Diagnose and resolve production incidents.
- Automate container provisioning with network isolation, resource limits and storage controls. Maintain hardened images and AI toolchains through version pinning, integrity verification, reproducible builds and controlled artifact promotion.
- Maintain software packaging, installation and controlled update processes, including desktop distribution where required.
- Operate background services and distributed job processing with concurrency control, locking, retries, idempotency and recovery from partial failures.
Quality Engineering
- Maintain unit, integration, API and browser regression tests against representative databases and isolated environments. Develop AI-assisted tests and adopt them only after repeated independent execution demonstrates reliability; evaluate agent workflows for correctness and failure handling.
- Maintain quality gates through static analysis, linting, code review and architecture checks. Build diagnostic and feedback tooling that captures reproducible defect information while redacting sensitive data.
Team Enablement
- Mentor developers through practical training, reference implementations and guidance on AI-assisted development, generated-work review and safe operating boundaries.
- Document architecture, technical decisions and integration procedures, and assess technical debt.
- Build proof-of-concept software for discovery and technical validation,
and communicate findings to company leadership and client stakeholders.
Requirements
Essential qualifications establish the technical bar for the role. The additional assets support the broader portfolio; experience with every listed technology is not required.
Essential Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- 10+ years of professional software development experience, including senior ownership of production systems from architecture and implementation through deployment, operation and modernization.
- Production experience with cloud infrastructure and containerized Linux environments, including infrastructure as code, automated provisioning, isolation, resource controls, hardening and incident troubleshooting.
- Production experience with model-agnostic LLM integrations, grounding and structured output validation, supported by measured evaluation and independent verification of generated work.
- Experience securing users, agents and services through standards-based identity, least-privilege authorization, credential lifecycle management and auditable activity.
- Strong backend engineering skills with .NET and Python, including API design, asynchronous processing, data access and maintainable service architecture.
- Demonstrated harness development experience connecting model calls, context and tools through MCP or equivalent interfaces, with task-state management, controlled execution, approval gates and failure recovery.
- Practical knowledge of AI-specific security risks, including prompt injection, unsafe tool use, sensitive data exposure and unintended network or resource access.
- Experience designing dependable data models, concurrency controls, synchronization and recovery mechanisms for distributed applications.
- Working knowledge of software supply chain security, dependency integrity, SBOMs and vulnerability management within development workflows.
- Clear technical communication and documentation skills, sound architectural judgment and the ability to collaborate with stakeholders and guide other developers.
- Experience with automated testing, CI/CD, controlled releases and operational monitoring.
