Site Reliability Engineer – CDN, Edge & Web Performance
Location: Toronto, ON
Client: RBC, via TCS
Job type: Permanent
Salary: CAD $130,000–$160,000 per year
About the role
We are seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to help build and operate RBC’s recent enterprise content management and digital asset management platform, powered by Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Edge Delivery Services.
Adobe operates the delivery platform, while RBC owns the CDN and edge configuration, release controls, website integrations, monitoring and operational processes. Your focus will be the reliability, security and performance of a public-facing banking website.
You will work with Adobe, Information Security, Network and CDN teams, Privacy, Production Support and a full-stack development team. Roughly half of the first year will involve establishing the platform’s reliability practice, followed by ongoing operation and improvement.
Key responsibilities
Monitoring and incident management
- Monitor CDN and edge configuration, DNS, TLS certificates, caching, invalidation and third-party website integrations.
- Build external synthetic monitoring across page templates and English and French experiences.
- Automate smoke tests for dependent services and integrations.
- Participate in a shared on-call rotation and lead customer-facing incident response.
- Maintain Adobe escalation procedures, severity mappings, contacts and incident evidence.
- Create troubleshooting runbooks for publishing failures, content visibility issues and content-source outages.
Release engineering and change management
- Design Git-based deployment processes that meet enterprise change-control requirements.
- Implement branch protection, required checks, linting, performance checks and secret-scanning gates.
- Establish and rehearse rollback procedures covering code reverts, content republishing and cache purging.
- Maintain approval, attribution and audit trails for content publishing.
- Support change advisory board reviews, release notes and release-freeze requirements.
Business continuity and resilience
- Manage CDN and edge configuration as code, with tested restoration procedures.
- Establish recovery processes for content sources, Git repositories and CDN configuration.
- Define recovery time and recovery point objectives with business stakeholders.
- Execute disaster recovery exercises covering certificate, WAF, cache invalidation, content-source and repository failures.
- Maintain operational resilience evidence and platform exit and portability plans.
Reliability and web performance
- Define service level objectives and error budgets for availability and page performance.
- Build dashboards and alerts using real user monitoring, Core Web Vitals, CDN logs and external synthetics.
- Investigate loading and rendering regressions using browser performance tools and network waterfalls.
- Establish third-party script and tag approval processes and enforce performance budgets.
- Monitor CDN egress, asset storage, media delivery and supporting API capacity and costs.
- Report reliability and performance results to business, risk and technology stakeholders.
Compliance and operational controls
- Manage CDN log ingestion into the enterprise SIEM and support retention requirements.
- Maintain access-review evidence across Adobe, Git, content sources and CDN platforms.
- Support privacy, operational risk, audit and third-party risk assessments.
- Keep configuration management records, support models and assignment groups current.
Required qualifications
- Substantial hands-on experience operating high-traffic public websites behind an enterprise CDN.
- Strong expertise in CDN origin configuration, cache behaviour, invalidation, edge logic, TLS and DNS.
CDN expertise is the primary technical requirement.
- Practical WAF experience, including rule tuning, false-positive analysis and bot management.
- Experience defining service level objectives and error budgets.
- Experience building observability using real-user telemetry, logs and synthetic monitoring.
- Strong web performance skills, including Core Web Vitals, browser loading and rendering behaviour, and waterfall analysis.
- Ability to read and troubleshoot front-end JavaScript and CSS.
- Experience with Git-based release engineering, CI/CD, infrastructure as code and configuration as code.
- Experience leading incidents affecting customer-facing services and capturing operational evidence.
- Experience working within enterprise change control, access management, audit and third-party risk processes.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with Akamai or Cloudflare.
- Adobe Experience Manager experience, particularly Edge Delivery Services or Assets as a Cloud Service.
- Experience supporting vendor-operated or SaaS platforms.
- Financial services or other regulated-industry experience.
- Experience supporting bilingual English and French websites.
- Working knowledge of accessibility and SEO.
- Automation skills in Python, Java or JavaScript.
Technical focus This position centres on CDN operations, edge security, browser performance, observability and release reliability. RBC does not operate servers, containers or clusters for this platform. Operating system patching, Kubernetes administration, application server management and database administration are outside the role’s core responsibilities.
Candidates should demonstrate direct experience with CDN operations and public website reliability.
How to apply
Apply through Indeed with your resume, highlighting your experience with CDN platforms, WAF and bot management, Core Web Vitals, real user monitoring, synthetic monitoring, Git-based releases and incident management.
