We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a father living with dementia in Bradford, Ontario. He lives at home with his wife, who has her own health challenges following a stroke. Their son lives two doors down and is actively involved in coordinating care. Dad's dementia is progressive, and he's becoming less independent. He recently experienced a fall and has been quite weak, requiring assistance to navigate their two-story home. This is the family's first time receiving skilled care support, and they're looking for someone reliable who can help maintain his safety and quality of life at home.
Responsibilities
The caregiver will provide comprehensive support focused primarily on morning care when dad needs the most assistance. Key responsibilities include mobility and transfer support, as he uses mobility aids and needs help moving safely around the home. Personal care assistance is essential, including help with bathing and dressing. Meal preparation will be required to ensure he receives proper nutrition throughout the day. Medication management support is needed to ensure he takes his medications as prescribed. Given his cognitive changes, the caregiver should provide memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed. Light supervision for safety is important to prevent falls and other incidents. Occasionally, transportation assistance for errands or appointments may be requested.
What We're Looking For
We need a PSW who makes clients feel comfortable and brings a calm, patient presence to the home. The ideal caregiver has experience supporting individuals with memory changes and dementia care. They should demonstrate strong communication skills with both the client and family members, be reliable and consistent,
and take initiative when situations require it. A positive attitude and the ability to respect the client's independence while ensuring safety are essential. The caregiver must be comfortable with full personal care, transfer assistance, and working with clients who have cognitive impairments. English language proficiency is required.
Schedule
The family is looking to start immediately and needs morning support several days per week. The exact schedule is flexible and will be determined during the care planning process, with a minimum commitment of 6 hours weekly spread across 2-3 visits of 2-3 hours each. The family is open to discussing the optimal schedule that meets dad's needs while ensuring consistency in care delivery.
