We are currently seeking a Property Accountant to join our accounting team. Reporting to the Controller, you'll manage the day-to-day books for a portfolio of residential and commercial properties and be a go-to contact for our property managers and owners.
Core Responsibilities
Keep full-cycle books for an assigned portfolio of properties in Yardi
Prepare monthly owner reports, rent rolls and financial statements for review, on schedule for delivery by the 10th of the following month
Process rent receipts and pre-authorized debits, and fix errors quickly with a same-week refund
Prepare security deposit statements and refunds within the 10 days required by the Residential Tenancies Act
Process accounts payable, making sure each invoice is coded to the right property and paid from the right entity
Do bank and trust account reconciliations, and reconcile tenant receivables. Flag uncollectible balances for write-off
Bill maintenance and renovation labour and materials to the correct properties
Handle GST for commercial properties, including correct treatment of property taxes and operating cost recoveries
Help with budgets, year-end files and owner requests such as trial balances and outstanding rent reports
Answer questions from property managers, owners and tenants promptly and clearly
Document your processes and help find tasks that can be automated
Job Requirements
Degree or diploma in accounting, plus a CPA designation or close to completing the CPA program
3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in property management or real estate
Experience with Yardi strongly preferred. Experience with Xero is an asset
Understanding of trust accounting and the Residential Tenancies Act is an asset
Strong Excel skills and high attention to detail
Highly organized, able to manage deadlines across many properties
Customer-service mindset with owners, tenants and vendors
Good written and verbal English
Legal to work in Canada
