Provide strategic legal guidance for the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs. This role focuses on contract negotiation, governance support, and advancing Indigenous rights within the KMK framework.
As a Legal Counsel, you will report directly to the Executive Director. You'll engage with internal stakeholders, government entities, and external legal counsel to foster collaborative legal services. Candidates with experience in contract law and Indigenous governance will thrive in this role that seeks to protect Mi’kmaw interests.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide legal advice on contracts and governance
• Review and negotiate various legal agreements
• Conduct legal research and prepare briefing materials
• Support the development of policies and governance frameworks
• Monitor legal developments impacting Indigenous organizations
Requirements:
• Law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) and good standing membership
• Minimum five years of legal experience preferred
• Solid negotiation and problem-solving skills
• Experience with Indigenous communities is an asset
• Knowledge of Mi’kmaq governance and treaty rights
