Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health. We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls. The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance. In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.
Nature and Scope Work within a collaborative, inter-professional team to appropriately manage and support caller access to health care services to meet their non-emergent, non-life-threatening health situations. The MCC-N will perform secondary telephone based medical triage of lower acuity 911 EHS calls, performing patient assessment, formulating treatment plans and assisting patients in arranging appropriate care using information and with the support of evidence–based, computer decision support software, clinical guidelines, protocols and other resources. The MCC-N will use critical thinking, therapeutic communication and clinical decision-making skills to assess, plan, implement, educate and evaluate the patients’ health situation and/or informational needs.
Duties and Responsibilities Demonstrates accountability for own nursing practice by complying with the Canadian Nurses Association (CAN) Code of Ethics, and Nova Scotia College of Nursing Standards for Nursing Practice.
Delivers appropriate patient care within the RN’s scope of practice and the MCC-N scope of employment.
Provides nursing care within the standards defined by professional nursing body, which has been legislated by the province to regulate and license registered nurses.
Provides telephone based clinical care advice, alternate care pathway and service referral to individuals through the effective application of registered nursing skills, clinical judgment, computer-based decision support software, appropriate evidence-based clinical guidelines, and other relevant information databases/resources.
Using in-depth clinical knowledge, applies process to identify patient care needs, risks and safety issues, educational opportunities, and appropriate health care referrals.
Apply critical analysis to the combination of complex information during the care process to provide accurate advice and health information to patients to empower them.
Accurately and completely document clinical and other relevant notes within the computer software program in a timely manner throughout and immediately during and after a call.
Demonstrates compliance with all program specific metrics, participates in the evaluation and or measurement of these metrics and plays an active role in improving personal, team and program performance.
Provides clinical advice and proactively promotes the use of alternative care pathways to operational staff.
Qualifications and Requirements Diploma in nursing; Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
Clinical nursing experience in an acute care environment (e.g., general medical surgical)
Emergency or intensive care unit experience
Experience in general nursing triage experience
Experience in nursing tele-triage, such as 811 or ECNS
Minimum three (3) years recent (within the past five years) clinical experience
An active license and good standing as a Registered Nurse with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) and compliance with all applicable laws pertaining to the practice of nursing in the province
Current BLS certification
Ability to obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Emergency Communication Nurse System (ECNS) certifications
Knowledge and Skills Excellent communication, telephone, web and customer relation skills
Good critical thinking, sound clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills
Demonstrates a commitment to education and training relating to EHS Medical Communications Centre protocols and processes.
Solid knowledge and competence in the use of computers and keyboarding
Fluency in English (oral and written) is required; fluency in English and French (oral and written preferred)
