POSITION SUMMARY The Respiratory Therapist in the Ambulatory Care department is a member of the multidisciplinary team responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and coordinating respiratory care for infants, children, and youth with complex respiratory needs, including patients who are technology-dependent, require home ventilation or respiratory support, have sleep-disordered breathing, and/or require pulmonary function testing. Working across ambulatory clinic, pulmonary function laboratory, and community settings, the Respiratory Therapist provides diagnostic testing, case-management support, patient and caregiver education, and coordination of respiratory equipment and services. The role includes both onsite clinical responsibilities and, as needed, home visits for community-based patients to support safe transitions, ongoing care and optimal patient outcomes.
The incumbent collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and community partners to promote evidence-based practice, ensure seamless care delivery, and support quality improvement and qualified respiratory therapy practice.
Provide diagnostic testing including pulmonary function, bronchial provocation and cardiopulmonary exercise testing
Utilise clinical practice guidelines, clinical pathways, medical directives, hospital policies and procedures to promote and implement evidence based practice
Provide respiratory care to children and youth with complex respiratory needs in clinic, pulmonary function laboratory, home, and community settings
Conduct respiratory assessments, home visits, and caregiver education for technology-dependent patients
Support hospital-to-home transitions through care coordination, discharge planning, and equipment assessment
Provide education and support to patients, families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and community partners
Support case-management activities, including clinics, equipment management, adherence monitoring, and home ventilation rounds
Coordinate urgent patient needs and collaborate with the Respirology team and interdisciplinary partners
Ensure safe application, management, and troubleshooting of respiratory equipment and technology
Administer inhaled medications in accordance with medical directives and physician orders
Apply evidence-based practice through clinical guidelines, pathways, directives, policies, and procedures
Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and provide respiratory therapy consultation
Contribute to quality improvement, research, operational initiatives, and development of clinical resources
Support orientation, training, mentorship, and preceptorship of staff, learners, and students
Collaborate with community agencies and external healthcare organisations to promote best practices and continuity of care
Maintain professional respiratory therapy standards and perform other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS Member of the College of Respiratory Therapy (General Certificate) (Essential)
BCLS (Essential)
Minimum 3 years pediatric respiratory care experience (Essential)
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and collaborative practice skills (Essential)
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education, including independent learning (Essential)
Degree in Health Sciences or related field (Preferred)
Member in good standing of the RTSO (Preferred)
Member in good standing of the CRST (Preferred)
PALS & NRP certification (Preferred)
Experience in pulmonary function testing and case management with the complex respiratory patient population (Preferred)
Critical Care experience (Preferred)
Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
Bilingualism (English/French) (Preferred)
