As a Shipyard Heavy Equipment Mechanic, your primary objective is to contribute to the reliable operation and maintenance of heavy equipment within the shipyard, ensuring that cranes, forklifts, bulldozers, and other specialized machinery operate efficiently during shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance activities. Your expertise in heavy equipment mechanics, diagnostic skills, and commitment to safety will play a crucial role in minimizing downtime and supporting the overall success of shipyard operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on a variety of heavy equipment, including cranes, forklifts, bulldozers, excavators, and company vehicles, to ensure optimal performance and reliability
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in heavy equipment, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to identify and rectify problems promptly
Implement and adhere to preventative maintenance programs for heavy equipment, scheduling routine checks, lubrication, and replacements to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of the machinery
Identify, order, and replace damaged or worn‑out parts, ensuring compatibility, quality, and adherence to equipment specifications
Conduct post‑repair testing and inspections to ensure that heavy equipment meets or exceeds operational standards and safety requirements
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, parts, replacements, and equipment testing, contributing to the development of a comprehensive maintenance history for shipyard heavy equipment
Work closely with shipyard project managers, equipment operators, and other maintenance professionals to coordinate repairs, schedule maintenance, and contribute to the overall efficiency of shipyard operations
Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility to outside spaces with exposure to all elements
Keep the work site as a safe and clean environment to work in

Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents. Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace
Perform other duties as required
Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others
Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines
Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable
Participate in continuous improvement efforts
Requirements
Proven experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator an asset
Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems of heavy equipment
Knowledge of heavy equipment safety protocols, load capacities, and operational guidelines
Be trustworthy, dependable and confident, have a positive attitude, have good judgement and be a role model for others
Be able to work in a team environment
Be able to read/understand blueprints and/or drawings
Be conscientious in their work (attention to detail)
Be able to communicate in either English or French
Be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as requires
Be able to work overtime hours as required
