The incumbent translates verbal communication from one language to another during meetings and communication with students and their parents. The incumbent specializes in English and a second language to meet the needs of the students. We are looking for candidates who are fluent in one or more of these languages: Turkish / Vietnamese / Kurdish / Arabic
The main area of specialization is education, including literacy and numeracy. The job is also responsible for facilitating and coordinating first and second language communication with students, parents and staff. The work requires the incumbent to be fluent, both written and spoken, in English and various other languages.
This is a casual position with no guarantee of hours or location.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Interpret and translate written and spoken communications
2. Translate questions or requests clearly and accurately, conveying phrasing and intention as it relates to the subject.
3. Convert dialogue and convey the intent of the original speaker, understanding that many idioms and slang terms do not translate exactly between languages
4. Interpret after-school activities, meetings, parent-teacher conferences
5. Provide language interpretation support to families and school staff

Maintain technical knowledge through a range of professional development activities
Knowledge & Experience:
Diploma in child development, education, or related area, plus five years of related experience
Fluency in English and various other languages , both written and oral, is essential
Knowledge of the Alberta Education system in general and Language programming in particular
Knowledge of records management principles including FOIP legislation, Microsoft programs including Excel, Outlook and databases
Knowledge of safe workplace practices and an understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations
Understanding of the school curriculum, language and cultural programs
General knowledge of the Division’s and school’s programs and operations
Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are required
Ability to build and maintain rapport and trust with students
Strong leadership, mentoring and coaching skills
Strong communication skills
Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work independently
Robust planning, problem-solving, and analytical skills
Strong time management and organizational skills and the ability to manage conflicting priorities
Ability to travel throughout Edmonton is required
