Job Summary
Working as part of the Wellness Team and reporting directlyto the Wellness Team Manager, the Wellness Department Program Coordinator supportsthe planning, implementation, and reporting of programming in the Wellness andHealth Department. The Program Coordinator will work with Wellness teamsincluding the Garden, Art Therapy, Wellness Room, Mental Health and SubstanceUse, to offer a range of cultural and wellness programs to support the healthof the urban Indigenous community. This position requires a collaborativeapproach to working with internal and external partners, and a detailedapproach to program delivery.
Roles and Responsibilities
As a Wellness Department Program Coordinator, jobduties include the following:
Collaborate with WHD teams including the Garden,Art Therapy, MHSU, Indigenous Wellness Providers, and Indigenous Cultura andLanguage, to plan and implement programming.
Responsible for program logistics includingcoordinating internal and external Knowledge Keepers, Elders and facilitatorsto lead programming, booking program spaces, arranging food for hosting, marketingprogramming, and participating in program delivery as needed.
Coordinating the Wellness Room including workingwith partner agencies to develop schedules for offerings (massage, herbaltherapy, foot care etc), booking program participants, maintaining WellnessRoom supplies and equipment, and marketing programming.
Collect data on program offerings andparticipation, and support reporting for Wellness programming according to funder requirements.
Provide intermittent support to plan and hostthe VNFC weekly Community Soup Lunch.
Provide administrative support to the WellnessTeam Manager as required.
As a member of the VNFC team, job dutiesinclude the following:
Maintain confidentiality
Document and report activity in alignment with VNFC practices andsupports internal and external reporting as required
Attend relevant professional training and meetings when directed
Participate in staff development, staff meetings and departmentmeetings as required, including community and cultural events
Participate in data collection and evaluationtasks as requested
Knowledge and Skills
Familiarity and experience in Indigenous Communities
Someknowledge of Indigenous cultures and practices including from the territory inwhich the work of VNFC takes place.Ability to speak about one’s own Indigenous culture, if applicable, andany communities the (prospective) employee has previously lived in or held jobswithin.
Indepth knowledge of the experience of Indigenous peoples in Canada including theongoing processes of colonization, discrimination, and structural violence, andthe effects on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous communities;understanding of the wellness and healing capacities of Indigenous culturalresiliency and resurgence.
Knowledgeand practice of providing community-based services to Indigenous peoples usingphilosophies of cultural humility and cultural safety.
Communication Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal communication skillswith the ability to successfully develop and maintain relationships withdiverse internal and external stakeholders
Excellent written communication skills withthe ability to collaboratively write reports, presentations, electroniccorrespondence, proposals, and other forms of qualified communication.
Ability to effectively present informationand respond to questions from clients and the general public
Proficiency in software: Microsoft Office 365including Word, Excel, and Outlook; Canva; Adobe Pro
Leadership Skills and Abilities
Ability to work independently and be part of an integrated community team and inpartnership with a variety of agencies.
Ability tomulti-task while remaining composed and maintaining a professional attitude inhigh stress situations.
Ability to move multiple projects forwardat the same time and manage competing priorities and opportunities.
Facilitation skills and techniques anasset.
Program Knowledge andAbilities
Ability to practice using philosophies ofcultural safety and humility, harm reduction, and trauma informed care.
Knowledge and ability to work ethically andmaintain professional boundaries when working with vulnerable clients.
Ability to spend a major portion of theworkday standing, walking and/or sitting as well as possible bending andstretching, due to physical requirements of the work.
Qualifications
Education
Completedsome post‑secondary education in a related field such as Indigenousstudies, community development, social services, public administration,etc., or an equivalent combination of relevant training, lived experience,community involvement and/or employment experience.
Recognizedcourse(s) in cultural safety and humility or equivalent lived, cultural,community and/or professional experience.
Work Experience
Approximately2 years of relevant experience organizing and hosting community spaces andworking respectfully with Elders and/or Knowledge Keepers. Relevantexperience may be gained through employment, volunteering, cultural workand/or community involvement.
Experienceworking in an Indigenous-led or Indigenous-serving organization,Indigenous community, Friendship Centre or community nonprofit setting isan asset.
Licenses and/or Certificates
ValidBC Driver’s license an asset
FirstAid certification an asset
Must provide a current (within 6 mos.) Attorney General Vulnerable Sector CriminalRecord Check
