Our Opportunity
Reporting to the plant manager, you will work as part of a varied team composed of welders, fabricators, and machinists. Your primary focus will primarily be carrying out all aspects of receiving and managing raw materials as well as packaging and shipping finished products. If you are hardworking, versatile, and eager to learn, this role may be a good fit for you.
The successful candidate will be responsible for receiving, inspecting, organizing, storing, preparing, and shipping steel and other materials while maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work area.
Your Responsibilities
Receiving
- Receive incoming steel, stainless steel, aluminum, hardware, and other materials
- Verify quantities, dimensions, grades, and material against purchase orders and delivery documents
- Inspect incoming material for damage, shortages, or incorrect material
- Properly label and identify materials
- Safely unload trucks using forklifts, cranes, and appropriate rigging equipment
- Organize and store materials in designated locations
- Maintain accurate receiving records
- Communicate shortages, damage, or discrepancies to management
Material Handling
- Move raw materials safely and efficiently throughout the shop
- Supply material to laser, plasma, saw, brake press, welding, and fabrication areas as required
- Maintain organized material storage areas
- Ensure material is protected from unnecessary damage
- Use proper lifting, rigging, and handling procedures
- Maintain explicit access to aisles, exits, equipment, and work areas
Shipping
- Prepare completed steel components and assemblies for shipment
- Verify quantities and components against drawings, packing lists, and shipping documents
- Package and protect finished products to prevent damage during transportation
- Load trucks and trailers safely and efficiently
- Properly secure loads using chains, straps, blocking, and other approved methods
- Ensure shipments are properly identified and documented
- Coordinate with truck drivers and carriers
- Ensure the correct material goes on the correct truck and to the correct destination
Safety
Safety is a priority in this and all positions at Command. The successful candidate must:
- Follow all shop safety procedures
- Understand safe forklift and crane operation
- Understand proper rigging and load-handling practices
- Use appropriate PPE
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Recognize unsafe conditions and take action before an incident occurs
- Never take shortcuts when moving or securing heavy material
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in shipping and receiving, preferably in a steel fabrication or manufacturing environment
- Solid background in and knowledge of handling and moving steel, stainless steel, aluminum, plate, tubing, structural steel, and fabricated components
- Experience operating a forklift and other material-handling equipment
- Ability to safely load and unload trucks, trailers, and delivery vehicle
- Ability to read shop drawings, material lists, packing slips, purchase orders, and shipping documents
- Ability to identify different types, sizes, grades, and quantities of material
- Thorough understanding of proper material storage and organization
- Experience in preparing fabricated steel products for shipment
- Ability to properly secure loads for transportation
- Experience with overhead cranes, chains, slings, hooks, and other rigging equipment is a strong asset
- Strong attention to detail when checking incoming and outgoing materials
- Ability to identify damaged, missing, incorrect, or non-conforming material and report it immediately
- Basic computer skills for shipping/receiving documentation and inventory tracking
- Good communication skills with suppliers, truck drivers, customers, and shop personnel
- Ability to prioritize work and keep material moving through a busy shop
