BGD Contracting
Burnaby
Our client, BGD Contracting Ltd. is a growing specialty contractor based in British Columbia, specializing in automated gates, access control, parking systems, vehicle detection, and related electrical and civil infrastructure.
The team has more than 75 years of combined industry experience and has built a strong reputation for quality workmanship, responsive service, and solving challenging projects.
BGD works on a wide range of commercial, industrial, institutional, municipal, utility, and residential projects throughout British Columbia. Their work ranges from residential automated gates to complex access and vehicle-control systems for commercial properties, municipalities, utilities, airports, industrial facilities, and other critical infrastructure.
BGD provides complete solutions including system design and planning, equipment supply, civil and electrical work, installation, commissioning, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and ongoing service.
About the Role
We are looking for a motivated Installation / Service Technician to join BGD’s growing team.
This is a permanent, full time position combining field installation, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and service work. You will work both independently and as part of a team, with support from project management, service, electrical, and civil teams.
Most work is based throughout the Lower Mainland; however, BGD completes projects throughout British Columbia and occasionally outside the province. Out-of-town work and overnight travel will be required from time to time based on project and service requirements.
The position is well suited to someone who enjoys working with a combination of mechanical equipment, electrical controls, access control, construction, and technology rather than performing the same type of work every day.
BGD technicians work on a wide variety of equipment and projects, so strong troubleshooting skills, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are important.
What You'll Be Working On
BGD technicians install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair equipment including:
· Automated sliding, swing, folding, and specialty gate systems
· Commercial and residential gate operators
· Parking barrier gates and vehicle access systems
· Access control systems, card readers, keypads, and cellular access systems
· Vehicle detection loops and sensors
· Photo eyes, safety edges, and other gate safety devices
· Parking equipment and parking access/revenue control systems
· License plate recognition (LPR) equipment
· Traffic warning and vehicle detection systems
· Low-voltage control systems, relays, controllers, and associated field wiring
Key Responsibilities
As an Installation / Service Technician, your responsibilities will include:
· Install, service, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot automated gate, parking, access control, and related equipment
· Diagnose electrical, mechanical, communication, and control-system problems
· Assemble and install gate operators, barrier gates, access control equipment, safety devices,
vehicle detection equipment, and related components
· Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on existing systems
· Test and commission newly installed equipment
· Read and interpret drawings, electrical schematics, specifications, equipment manuals, and installation instructions
· Install and terminate low-voltage wiring, control wiring, sensors, relays, and related equipment
· Assist with layout and planning of new installations
· Measure and mark locations for equipment, conduits, foundations, loops, gates, and associated infrastructure
· Assist with civil work including digging, trenching, excavation, concrete foundations, gate posts, bollards, and equipment bases
· Load and unload trucks, trailers, tools, equipment, and materials
· Safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and construction equipment as qualified
· Maintain accurate service records and communicate findings and recommendations to customers and the BGD team
· Coordinate professionally with customers, project managers, general contractors, electricians, security contractors, other trades, and site safety personnel
· Follow BGD procedures, manufacturer requirements, site-specific safety requirements, and WorkSafeBC regulations
· Maintain company vehicles, tools, equipment, and assigned inventory
· Participate in an occasional rotating after-hours/on-call schedule
· Travel and work out of town, including overnight stays, when required for projects, installations, commissioning, or service work
· Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications & Experience
We're interested in candidates with a combination of technical ability, construction experience, and a willingness to learn. Experience specifically with automated gates is an asset but is not necessarily required for someone with a strong electrical, mechanical, or controls background.
The ideal candidate will have:
· Experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, or automated equipment
· Experience with low-voltage electrical and control systems
· Strong mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills
· Ability to safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
· Ability to read drawings, schematics, specifications, and equipment manuals
· General knowledge of construction practices, equipment, and WorkSafeBC requirements
· Basic to intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email, web-based software, and mobile applications
· Strong verbal and written communication skills and fluency in English
· Good organizational and time-management skills
· Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
· Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position
· Willingness to occasionally work outside normal business hours when project or service requirements dictate
· Willingness to participate in a rotating on-call schedule when required
· Willingness and ability to travel and work out of town when required, including occasional overnight stays
· Valid BC Class 5 driver's licence with an acceptable driver's abstract
