The Opportunity
Tidewater has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Environmental Engineer reporting to the General Manager of the refinery. This is a full time position based in Prince George, BC.
About the Role
The Senior Environmental Engineer is a key technical and regulatory leadership position responsible for ensuring environmental compliance across both the Conventional Refinery and the Renewable Diesel (HDRD) facility. This role works closely with the General Managers of both operations, as well as Operations, Maintenance, and Project teams, to ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with environmental permits, applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, and company standards.
The Senior Environmental Engineer provides expert guidance and oversight on environmental matters affecting refinery operations and capital projects. The position is accountable for coordinating environmental compliance programs, evaluating operational impacts, and ensuring site activities align with corporate environmental objectives and regulatory obligations.
Key responsibilities include the preparation, management, and submission of environmental reporting requirements, including greenhouse gas emissions reporting, National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) submissions, BC Output-Based Pricing System (BC-OBPS) compliance, and programs related to volatile organic compound (VOC) reduction. This includes Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programs, fence-line monitoring, storage tank emissions management, and loading emissions compliance.
The Senior Environmental Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving environmental management systems, procedures, and programs that minimize current and future environmental risks. The role proactively identifies compliance risks, evaluates changing regulatory requirements, and supports operational excellence through sustainable environmental performance and continuous improvement initiatives.
Given the technical complexity of refinery operations, evolving regulatory requirements, and the independent decision-making required, this position is intended for an experienced environmental professional and is not considered an entry-level or junior engineering role.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure compliance with all environmental permits, regulations,
and company environmental standards for both the Conventional Refinery and HDRD facilities.
Serve as the site's subject matter expert on environmental regulatory compliance and environmental risk management.
Provide environmental guidance and support to Operations, Maintenance, and Project teams.
Coordinate and submit all required environmental reporting, including GHG, NPRI, BC-OBPS, and other federal, provincial, and corporate requirements.
Manage and oversee VOC reduction initiatives, including LDAR programs, fence-line monitoring, storage tank emissions controls, and loading emissions management.
Develop, implement, and maintain environmental procedures, programs, and management systems.
Monitor regulatory changes and ensure site compliance with emerging environmental requirements.
Support environmental audits, inspections, permit applications, and interactions with regulatory agencies.
Identify opportunities to improve environmental performance while supporting safe, reliable, and efficient refinery operations.
Work collaboratively with refinery leadership to integrate environmental stewardship into operational and strategic decision-making.
Represent Tidewater externally in the local airshed monitoring working group and industry association committees
Manage an annual environmental budget of approximately $1M, including supervision of external contractors
Ideal Candidate
Education & Professional Designations
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Chemical, or Process Engineering (required)
EIT or P.Eng. designation, or eligibility to register with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (required)
Master’s Degree in Engineering (asset)
Industrial hygiene and hazardous materials training (asset)
Experience
Minimum 5+ years of environmental experience in an industrial setting
Experience working within complex industrial facilities, including brownfield sites and major operating facilities
Proven experience developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive environmental, health, and safety (HSE) management systems
Experience working with regulatory agencies, government authorities, and public stakeholders
Experience with emissions reporting and environmental compliance programs, including greenhouse gas reporting, NPRI, BC-OBPS, VOC reduction initiatives, LDAR programs, fence-line monitoring, storage emissions, and loading emissions compliance Demonstrated leadership, project management, and organizational skills
Experience managing multiple environmental initiatives and compliance programs simultaneously
Technical Knowledge & Skills
Strong knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation, regulations,
permits, and compliance requirements
Strong technical aptitude with the ability to conduct field investigations, analyze data, and prepare technical reports
Ability to effectively communicate and liaise with regulatory agencies and government officials
Ability to influence environmental project development and support business and corporate objectives
Strong project planning and execution skills, including managing schedules, budgets, and competing priorities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is an experienced Environmental Engineer with a professional engineering designation and at least five years of industrial environmental compliance experience. They possess a strong understanding of refinery and industrial operations, environmental regulations, emissions reporting programs, and environmental management systems, along with demonstrated leadership, stakeholder engagement, and project management capabilities. This is a senior-level technical role requiring independent judgment and the ability to influence environmental performance across refinery and HDRD operations.
