The Drilling Fluids Engineer responsibilities include testing, analyzing results, formulation, on-site implementation and technical management of drilling and completion fluid systems during well operations. This role performs real-time mud property testing, monitors and optimizes key fluid parameters including density, viscosity, filtration and salinity to maintain wellbore stability, prevent lost circulation, hole collapse and formation damage, to ensure optimized drilling progress. The Fluid Engineer provides on-site technical guidance for mud mixing and treatment, maintains operational HSE compliance, analyzes field technical issues, and delivers professional mud engineering solutions to minimize drilling risks and improve overall well efficiency as well as mentoring of best practices and lessons learned through written and oral communication requiring robust office and software skills.
Responsibilities:
- Fluid System: Optimize drilling and completion fluid formulas based on well parameters and formation conditions.
- On-site Mud Performance Monitoring & Adjustment: Ensures that mud program parameters per hole section are followed by conducting daily sampling and testing of key mud properties including density, viscosity, filtration and solid content. Monitor real-time downhole fluid conditions, adjust formulas and additive dosage timely to stabilize fluid performance and maintain wellbore integrity.
- Downhole Risk Prevention; Disposal: Prevent and handle fluid-related downhole risks such as hole collapse, lost circulation, pipe sticking, gas cut and formation damage. Analyze complex downhole issues, formulate effective treatment measures and cooperate with drilling teams to eliminate hidden operational risks.
- On-site Technical Guidance & Operation Supervision:
Provide on-site technical guidance for mud mixing, chemical additives, fluid circulation and solid control system operation. Standardize on-site operating procedures and supervise & coordinate the use of mud chemicals and solid control equipment to meet programmed mud specifications.
- Material & Cost Management: Calculate mud chemical demands and submit accurate material application plans. Optimize additive usage, control on-site material consumption, reduce waste, and manage mud operation costs while ensuring drilling safety and stable fluid performance.
- Data Recording, Analysis & Reporting: Record daily mud performance data, additive usage and downhole operation conditions. Analyze field data regularly, summarize operational problems, and compile daily, monthly and completion technical reports for client and project management.
- HSE Compliance & Site Management: Implement project HSE and environmental protection requirements for all fluid operations. Standardize chemical storage and usage, prevent mud leakage and pollution, and supervise safe waste mud disposal to avoid safety and environmental incidents.
- Technical Training & Communication Coordination: Deliver regular on-site training on mud testing, standardized operations and risk emergency skills. Communicate efficiently with Drilling Fluid Operations Supervisor,
drilling supervisors and client representatives to coordinate and resolve on-site technical and operational issues related to drilling fluids.
- Emergency Response: Respond to fluid-related emergencies including severe lost circulation, wellbore instability and gas influxes. Formulate emergency fluid adjustment schemes, guide in office operations, and summarize experience to optimize subsequent drilling fluid technical solutions.
- Quality Control & Technical Optimization: Control the whole-process of mud operations and verify the accuracy of field test data. Apply new fluid technologies and materials, optimize mud formulas and processes, and improve fluid adaptability to optimize drilling quality and efficiency.
- Perform any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
Relevant Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or Expert knowledge in Drilling Fluid systems, WBS & OBM drilling fluids and Drilling fluid products and additives
- 10+ years of work experience with SAGD experience preferred
