Thunder Bay International Airports Authority Inc. (TBIAA) is seeking a technically skilled and adaptable individual for the role of Airport Maintenance Support (AMS). The Airport Maintenance Support will report to the Facilities Manager.
Teamwork and the ability to make appropriate decisions are critical to the safety and success of this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Functions:
Under the supervision of others, the position will assist with Installation, maintenance, repair and overhaul of building mechanical and airport systems and equipment by:
- Inspecting and checking function and performance against manufacturers’ specification, manuals, blueprints
- Correcting performance as required
- Daily inspections and operational checks for proper function of systems
- Responding to identified problems and failures as directed, to restore function of systems and ensure the comfort of facility users, and tenants
- Using hand tools, power assisted tools, precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicator gauges
Performs duties such as assisting other trades in the performance of their duties, i.e. lining up of machine components, safety spotting, assistance with heavy loads
-Assisting in maintaining and repairing equipment at sites throughout the airport
-Assists in the performance of other facilities projects.
Performs all the functions of the employee’s primary occupational specialty, in response to operational requirements
Human Relations:
Interacts with TBIAAI staff and allied agencies such as NavCanada, Transport Canada Regulatory personnel, Municipal Authorities as well as land and building tenants, suppliers, maintenance contractors and consultants.
The employee is expected to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships in the workplace and on site, and perform in a manner befitting a representative of the Thunder Bay International Airports Authority Inc.
Basic Requirements for the Position:
B1 - Valid Ontario G Driver’s License and the ability to obtain an Airside Vehicle Operator’s Permit.
B2 - Physical fitness: Able to stand, walk, squat, kneel, and perform manual tasks indoors and outdoors for extended periods.
B3 - Technical proficiency: Experienced in operating basic hand and power tools.
B4 - Blueprint literacy: Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and manufacturing specifications.
B5 - Security clearance eligibility: Must be able to secure a Government of Canada clearance to work in restricted airport areas.
B6 – Education and experience: Minimum high school diploma / GED with three years of recent, relevant work experience involving advanced technical skills with building and mechanical systems.
B7 - Language skills: Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
Additional Qualifications:
Education and Experience
E1 - Educational background: College diploma or certificate from a technical program such as Mechanical Technician, Instrumentation Technician, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
E2 - Building maintenance experience: Proficient in a wide variety of general maintenance tasks such as plumbing, painting, drywall installation and finishing (taping, mudding, sanding), flooring installation and repair, moulding, trim work, minor electrical repairs (e.g., lighting, fixtures), basic carpentry, furniture and fixture assembly, door hardware maintenance, and other miscellaneous repairs.
E3 - Contract performance monitoring: Experienced in overseeing and evaluating contractor work and performance.
E4 - Mechanical systems expertise: Advanced experience in maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting of HVAC systems, conveyors, and related mechanical equipment. Preference will be given to candidates with certification or specialized experience
Abilities and Skills
A1 - Safety compliance: Proven ability to adhere strictly to procedures and safety protocols.
A2 - Computer proficiency: Strong ability to use facility monitoring and building automation systems to track equipment status, identify issues, and communicate findings to supervisors. Must be comfortable navigating digital tools, interpreting system alerts, and documenting maintenance activities. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook) is required for reporting and communication.
A3 - Shift Work: Willingness and Ability to work pre-determined hours based on shift work schedules, including evenings and weekends.
A4 - Communication skills: Demonstrated ability to maintain positive relationships with customers, vendors, colleagues, and management through explicit oral and written communication, including effective follow-up with customers, project managers, and contractors.
A5 - Physical requirements: Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work, including:
- Working in potentially hazardous environments (e.g., confined spaces, near active mechanical systems).
- Conducting emergency repairs outdoors, including in extreme weather conditions. o Climbing ladders and scaffolding.
-Lifting heavy objects.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposed on a frequent basis to hazards normally associated with building mechanical systems, airport airside/groundside operations, as well as noise and heat from building environmental systems, generating equipment, and power assisted tools. Working in confined spaces, in cramped positions, also on ladders, and scaffolds.
Pay: $37.02 per hour
