Accounting Officer

Royal Oak Burial Park, the largest municipally owned burial park in British Columbia, covering more than 90 acres of landscaped parkland, is seeking a dedicated Accounting Officer to join our team.

Position Overview

The Accounting Officer is responsible for the day-to-day, full-cycle financial and bookkeeping functions of Royal Oak Burial Park, including revenue recording, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, bank and account reconciliations, financial reporting, and statutory remittances. The position also provides administrative support and limited family-service assistance as required.

The successful candidate will be able to work independently, manage competing priorities, maintain a high degree of accuracy, and exercise sound judgement when handling confidential and sensitive information. Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, along with a self-starting approach, are essential.

Wage & Hours

$38.80 per hour

Current rate under the expired collective agreement (2024). Wage rate is presently under negotiation.

40 hours per week
Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Key Duties & Responsibilities





- Record financial transactions and journal entries using Sage 50
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Prepare EFT and cheque payment runs
- Process biweekly payroll for approximately 20-25 employees, depending on seasonal staffing levels
- Complete bank, fund, investment, credit card, and other financial reconciliations
- Monitor bank accounts and financial activity
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and variance reports
- Prepare GST, PST, WorkSafeBC, EHT, and other required remittances
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation
- Prepare audit working papers and coordinate information required for the annual audit
- Assist with year-end accounting and adjusting entries
- Provide administrative and cross-functional support to staff and leadership as needed
- Provide limited family-service assistance, including assisting client families and funeral service personnel, supporting service bookings, and preparing related documentation
- Perform financial analysis, account reconciliations, and special projects as required
- Manage multiple priorities and recurring financial deadlines
- Maintain a high standard of accuracy, reliability, and accountability

Education & Experience





- Formal post-secondary education in accounting or business administration; a diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred
- Minimum of three years of experience in a broad-based accounting or bookkeeping role
- Strong working knowledge of Sage 50 and Microsoft 365, particularly Excel
- Experience with online banking and electronic payment systems
- Strong full-cycle accounting knowledge, including accounts payable, payroll, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills
- Ability to explain financial information and processes clearly to management and other stakeholders
- Ability to interact with client families, funeral service personnel, suppliers, and the public in a compassionate and professional manner

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with fund accounting, non-profit accounting, or a similar multi-fund financial environment
- Experience in the cemetery, funeral, or related death-care sector is an asset
- Familiarity with legislation and regulations applicable to cemetery and funeral services is an asset
