Journeyman Commercial HVAC/R Technician
Pay: CA$55.00–CA$58.00 per hour, with top rate available for the right candidate
Job Type: Full-time, permanent
Location: Edmonton, AB and surrounding Alberta service areas
Schedule: Monday to Friday, typically 40–50 hours per week, with participation in an on-call rotation approximately every 6–8 weeks
Provincial Refrigeration is looking for an experienced Journeyman Commercial HVAC/R Technician to join our service team. This is a broad commercial HVAC/R service role supporting a varied commercial customer base across Edmonton and surrounding Alberta service areas. The right candidate is comfortable working across both commercial building systems and commercial refrigeration, but does not need to be a specialist in every equipment type.
We are looking for a capable field technician who can troubleshoot properly, communicate clearly, and make sound service decisions in the field. Strong commercial HVAC and building systems experience is important, and solid commercial refrigeration competency is also required. Specialty experience with hydronics, chillers, ice machines, food equipment, or building automation is an asset, but not a requirement.
What We’re Looking For
- Journeyperson-level HVAC/R, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic certification, or equivalent commercial HVAC/R trade experience
- Strong commercial HVAC and building systems troubleshooting experience
- Solid commercial refrigeration service and repair competency
- Comfortable working across varied commercial HVAC/R service calls, including rooftop units, make-up air units, exhaust systems, ventilation equipment, controls, walk-in coolers, and freezers
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting ability
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and clean driver’s abstract
- Able to work independently, make sound field decisions, communicate clearly, and complete service documentation consistently
- Able to complete required pre-employment screening
Why Technicians Consider This Role
- Competitive journeyman wage of CA$55.00–CA$58.00 per hour, with top rate available for the right candidate
- Steady,
year-round commercial HVAC/R service work across building systems and refrigeration
- Company service vehicle and company cell phone provided
- 100% company-paid extended health, dental, vision, and life insurance after 3 months
- RRSP matching starting at 3% after 3 months and increasing with tenure
- $250 annual boot allowance and up to $1,000 annual tool allowance after 3 months for approved tool replacements due to wear, tear, or mishap, supported by receipts
- On-call rotation approximately every 6–8 weeks, with $200 on-call premium
- Opportunities for overtime, emergency service calls, approved after-hours work, and additional on-call shifts where available
- Company-provided PPE, company apparel, and major specialty equipment such as leak detectors and vacuum pumps; standard hand tools and gauges are technician-provided
- Approved manufacturer, safety, code, and industry training, plus up to $1,000 annually toward approved continued education after 1 year
- Office, service, parts, and warehouse support to help technicians stay productive in the field
What You’ll Be Doing
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, airflow, refrigeration, and controls-related issues
- Service, maintain, and repair commercial rooftop units, make-up air units, exhaust systems, ventilation equipment, building systems, walk-in coolers, freezers, and related HVAC/R equipment
- Repair and replace compressors, motors, fan assemblies, controls, belts, dampers, and refrigeration components
- Detect leaks, charge refrigerants, and ensure HVAC/R systems are operating safely and efficiently
- Read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals
- Complete preventative maintenance, service reports, and clear follow-up notes
- Communicate clearly with customers about problems, risks, recommendations,
and repair options
- Work independently in the field with support available when needed and participate in the on-call rotation
Helpful Experience, But Not Required
- Advanced commercial refrigeration troubleshooting
- Ice machine or commercial food equipment experience
- Building automation, hydronic heating/cooling systems, or chiller experience
- Experience mentoring apprentices or supporting less-experienced technicians
Who This Role Fits Best
This role is best suited for a technician who is already capable in the field, takes pride in solving commercial HVAC/R service problems properly, and can be dispatched across a broad mix of commercial building systems and refrigeration calls. You do not need to know every system perfectly, but reliability, honesty, clear communication, and positive judgment in the field are important.
