Physician Assistant for Obstetrics and Gynecology practice

Location: Intersection of Sheppard and Leslie, North York, ON

Hours: Full time, hybrid in-person/remote work (2 days minimum in person per week). Hours are Monday-Friday 8am-3pm with no evening or weekend work and no on-call expectations.

Salary: $80,000 - $85,000 per year

Duration: Full time position for 12 month contract

Practice Description

We are a busy Obstetrics and Gynecology practice providing full-spectrum general gynecology and pregnancy care in North York, Toronto, Ontario, an area with a diverse and growing population. The gynecology portion of the practice sees women of all ages, with a focus on contraception, menopause and surgical gynecology. The obstetrical portion of the practice provides comprehensive antenatal and postpartum care, with a large new immigrant and refugee population. Our mission is to provide thoughtful, patient-centred care with a high degree of clinical excellence. Obstetrical and gynecological inpatients are seen at North York General Hospital, and the outpatient clinic is located near the hospital.

Position Description

The Physician Assistant (PA) will work under the supervision of one Obstetrician-Gynecologist, with the support of a medical office assistant. The position includes completing detailed clinical assessments, reviewing investigations and communicating results to patients, reviewing cases and results with the supervising physician, and completing related administrative clinical documentation. There is potential scope for rounding on hospital in-patients and surgical assisting based on applicant interest, pending approval for hospital privileges.

Prior experience working with women or vulnerable populations is an asset. The successful candidate must be committed to lifelong learning, empathetic, and be an excellent team player. We are a close-knit,

Role and responsibilities

· Complete detailed clinical histories, including but not limited to the following:

o antenatal histories for new obstetrical patients

o full medical histories for new gynecological patients,

o interval histories for long-term follow up patients

· Performing routine focused physical exams and minor investigations, including but not limited to:

o fetal heart rate auscultations, symphysis-fundal height measurements, manual blood pressure measurements, vulvar exams for stable vulvar conditions (lichen sclerosis, genitourinary syndrome of menopause), post-operative abdominal exams including incision checks and suture removals post C-section, pap tests, vaginal swabs.

· Assist supervising physician with office procedures, such as IUD insertion, contraceptive implant insertion, endometrial biopsies, and vulvar biopsies.

· Order and interpret diagnostic tests and create treatment plans in discussion with the supervising physician.

· Review routine obstetrical and gynecological investigations including but not limited to: obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound/MRIs, aneuploidy screening, routine serologies, gestational diabetes screening, GBS screening, pap screening, STI testing, vaginal swabs

· Educate and counsel patients on test results, preventative care and respond to routine patient queries

· Provide post-partum support, including incision check post C-section, vulvar check post complex vaginal tearing, BP monitoring for postpartum pre-eclampsia,



potential for training in support with breastfeeding and screening for postpartum depression/psychosis.

· Provide post-operative support, including reviewing recovery milestones, incision checks and reviewing routine pathology results.

· Efficiently and accurately document all in-person and virtual clinical encounters on the electronic medical record

· Triage gynecology referrals from primary care and emergency physicians

· Renew prescriptions and order new prescriptions in discussion with the supervising physician

· Review patient charts in preparation for surgery, including identifying any pre-operative documentation/checklists as needed

· Assist in any special projects and/or tasks as needed per the supervising physician which is within the scope of a physician assistant.

· Collaborate with the physician and MOA to ensure excellent quality of care for patients

Requirements

· Graduate of McMaster University or Consortium of PA Education program and must have OR be eligible for certification through the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada

· CPR and First Aid certified

· Position open to new graduates, no prior experience required and training is provided.

· EMR experience with Accuro is an asset

· Prior experience working with women or vulnerable populations is an asset.
