Developmental Support Worker / Personal Support Worker / Health Care Aide - Cobourg, ON - CAD$54.00/week
Description
About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a gentleman living with Parkinson's disease in Coburg. He lives with his wife in their family home, located about ten minutes from their adult children. While his wife is in great health and manages most household tasks, our client responds better to direction and motivation from healthcare professionals rather than family members. He currently receives weekly stretching sessions and chiropractic care, and still drives independently, though his mobility is declining. He uses a walker and experiences stiffness primarily on the left side of his body, with symptoms worsening as the day progresses. Mornings are his best time, when he's most upright and active.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with mobility exercises and rehabilitation routines
- Help client use Neuro boots for 30 minutes, demonstrating proper technique
- Create and maintain a weekly task list with accountability check-ins
- Provide gentle reminders and encouragement for daily activities
- Suggest and implement practical adaptive techniques for daily living
- Offer light assistance with activities around the home
- Provide companionship and positive motivation
- Occasionally accompany client on outings to local shops or appointments using family vehicle
What We're Looking For:
- Experience working with Parkinson's disease or similar neurological conditions
- Strong motivational and coaching skills
- Ability to build trust and rapport with seniors
- Patient, qualified demeanor with excellent communication
- Takes initiative and thinks creatively about solutions
- Comfortable providing gentle accountability without being pushy
- English speaking
- Valid driver's license for occasional outings (family vehicle provided)
- Understanding that progress may be gradual and requires consistent encouragement
Schedule:
We're starting with 2 hours per week, ideally Monday or Wednesday mornings from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The family is open to growing this to twice weekly visits as the relationship develops. Morning visits work best when the client has optimal energy and mobility. This is a long-term opportunity with potential for increased hours based on evolving needs and caregiver fit.

Additional Considerations
Client's father has Parkinson's disease and uses a walker. He responds better to direction from healthcare professionals than family members. Focus needed on rehabilitation exercises, creating task lists, and providing motivation. He has neuro boots that require assistance with application and encouragement for independent use. Client's mother is primary caregiver but recently had shoulder surgery. Father still drives but mobility declining. Better mobility and responsiveness earlier in day (mornings preferred). Two-step entry to bedroom area and living room with handrails installed. Parkinson's affects left side of body causing stiffness and reduced activity. Father benefits from structured routines and accountability check-ins.
