We’re now looking for an experienced leader to join our team as Director of Maintenance, overseeing operations across all of our sites.
The Opportunity
The Director of Maintenance is responsible for the strategic leadership, planning, and execution of all maintenance and facilities operations across the organization. This role ensures the reliability, efficiency, and safety of all equipment, infrastructure, and utility systems, including greenhouse systems, and packhouse equipment.
The Director of Maintenance will lead the maintenance team, oversee all preventative maintenance, manages capital projects, and ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements. This position plays a critical role in supporting the production and operations of the company.
Duties & Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy:
- Provide leadership and direction to the maintenance team
- Develop and execute maintenance strategies aligned with operational and production goals
- Establish KPIs and performance metrics for equipment reliability, downtime, and maintenance efficiency
Maintenance & Reliability:
- Oversee preventative and predictive maintenance programs to minimize downtime
- Ensure the team is responding timely and effectively to equipment failures and operational issues
- Optimize maintenance planning, scheduling, and resource allocation
- Coordinate the day-to-day maintenance operations of the greenhouse to support efficient workflow, crop health, and production targets.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives to increase equipment reliability and lifespan
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, logs, and reporting systems
- Manage maintenance-related projects, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Collaborate with other departments, contractors, and suppliers to deliver seamless maintenance support.
- Develop and manage part inventories, ordering, and purchasing to ensure cost-effective practices.
Facilities & Utilities Management:
- Oversee all facility systems including HVAC, irrigation, climate control, and structural infrastructure
- Manage boilers, and utility operations (steam, water, CO₂ systems)
- Ensure efficient energy usage and support sustainability initiatives
- Coordinate major repairs, shutdowns, and system upgrades
Capital Projects & Budgeting:
- Lead maintenance-related capital planning and execution
- Develop and manage maintenance and facilities budgets
- Evaluate and prioritize equipment upgrades and replacements
- Work with vendors and contractors on project delivery and performance
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, including OH&S; and environmental standards
- Oversee regulatory compliance related to pressure equipment and power engineering (e.g., ABSA)
- Oversee audits, inspections, and incident investigations
- Maintain accurate records to support compliance, risk management, and operational excellence.
Continuous Improvement:
- Identify risks and inefficiencies,
implementing solutions that drive performance and cost-effectiveness.
- Use data and KPIs to measure success, track trends, and guide improvements.
- Lead and implement initiatives for process improvement and operational excellence.
Vendor & Contractor Management:
- Manage relationships with external service providers and contractors
- Negotiate service agreements and monitor performance
- Ensure quality and cost-effectiveness of outsourced work
Qualifications & Experience
- 7–10+ years of experience in maintenance, or roles
- Experience in greenhouse, agriculture, food processing, or industrial environments preferred
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and utility systems
- Experience managing boilers, or power systems is an asset
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams and budgets
- Power Engineering certification (e.g., 3rd or 4th Class) considered an asset
- Strong problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills
