Job Summary:
Four Winds Youth Care is seeking a caring, dependable, and culturally respectful House Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our specialized foster placement for children and youth. This is a leadership role and a relationship role: you will guide and support the house team while being a steady, trusted presence in the lives of the children who live there.
You will help create a safe, stable, and nurturing home where each child’s identity, family connections, and culture are honoured and supported. You will work closely with the Youth Care Workers / Support Workers, social workers, clinicians, families, Elders, and community partners.
Responsibilities:
Support and care for the children
- Be a constant, consistent, and caring support figure for the children and youth, building trusting relationships and providing a stable presence in the home
- Provide trauma-informed care and guidance for children with complex needs, using de-escalation, harm reduction, and strengths-based approaches
- Help develop, implement, and review each child’s care and support plan in consultation with social workers, families, and other professionals
- Support school attendance, homework, appointments (with transportation as needed), recreation, and life-skills development
- Respond to crisis situations and high-risk behaviours calmly and safely, and provide direct care when needed
- Support and supervise family visits, and maintain respectful relationships with parents, extended family, and community members
Culture, identity, and connection
- Support children in staying connected to their culture, language, family, community, and traditions, following the guidance of the child’s family, community, and cultural helpers
- Work respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and cultural helpers, and plan cultural activities, ceremonies, and community events for the home
Day-to-day operations and household management
- Oversee daily routines and the smooth running of the household, including meals,
cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep
- Plan menus, manage groceries and supplies, coordinate maintenance and repairs, and track household, recreation, and allowance spending within the approved budget
- Ensure health and safety standards are maintained, including fire drills, safety checks, and emergency procedures
Staff leadership and supervision
- Lead, schedule, and support the Youth Care Workers / Support Workers, ensure full shift coverage, and take part in recruitment and training of new staff
- Provide orientation, coaching, regular check-ins, and feedback to staff, and model respectful, trauma-informed practice
- Lead regular team meetings, address performance concerns in line with agency policy, and encourage teamwork and staff well-being
Documentation and compliance
- Oversee medication administration and records, and ensure staff follow established policies and procedures
- Review and complete daily logs, incident reports, medication records, financial logs, and other required documentation accurately and on time
- Ensure the home meets agency, licensing, and funder standards, and prepare for reviews and audits
- Communicate regularly with management, social workers, and placing agencies about each child’s progress and any concerns
- Perform other duties as assigned
Experience:
Required
- Grade 12 diploma (or equivalent)
- Diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Social Services, Human Services, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum two (2) years of experience working with children and youth in care,
in residential or foster settings, including experience in a lead or supervisory role
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultures and communities, and of the ongoing impacts of colonization, residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and intergenerational trauma
- Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, scheduling, budgeting, and documentation skills, and comfort with basic computer software
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle highly sensitive information
- Current First Aid and CPR
- Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s licence and access to a reliable insured vehicle with $2 million liability coverage
- Willingness to provide occasional flexibility outside regular hours to respond to emergencies or attend meetings
Assets
- Post-secondary education in Child and Youth Care, Social Services, Human Services, Indigenous Community Development, Mental Health, or a related field
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI or equivalent), ASIST, Mental Health First Aid, Circle of Security, or medication administration training
- Experience supporting children with FASD, developmental disabilities, attachment challenges, or complex behavioural needs.
