Junior Draftsperson / Engineering Technologist
Gemcast is looking for a motivated and mechanically minded Junior Draftsperson / Engineering Technologist to join our Engineering and Quality team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate looking to build a career in engineering and manufacturing.
The successful candidate will work closely with our Engineering and Quality teams and will gain hands-on experience in 3D CAD, engineering drawings, quality control, CNC programming, and manufacturing.Experience is an asset, but new graduates are encouraged to apply. We are looking for someone with a strong technical foundation, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
About the Role
This is a hands-on position that combines office-based engineering work with time on the manufacturing floor. You will support our engineering and quality functions while developing the skills required to eventually take on greater engineering responsibility.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Creating and modifying 3D models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks
- Measuring existing components and samples and using those measurements to create accurate 3D models and drawings
- Interpreting existing engineering drawings and incorporating modifications such as insulation, hardware, anchors, and other components
- Preparing drawings and documentation for manufacturing
- Supporting the engineering team with day-to-day technical and drafting requirements
- Assisting with CNC router programming using Mastercam
- Learning to develop and modify CNC programs under the guidance of our experienced engineering team
- Creating and completing QA checklists and inspection reports
- Assisting with dimensional inspections and verifying manufactured components against engineering drawings and specifications
- Preparing Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and assisting with corrective actions- Writing and maintaining simple work procedures and technical documentation
- Working directly with production personnel to resolve drawing, dimensional, and manufacturing issues
- Spending time on the shop floor measuring, inspecting, troubleshooting, and learning how our products are manufactured
- Performing other engineering and technical support duties as required
What We're Looking For
- Post-secondary certificate or diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, CAD/Drafting, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or a related field
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Comfortable taking accurate physical measurements using tools such as calipers, tape measures, and other inspection equipment
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks
- Strong mechanical aptitude and spatial reasoning
- Good attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate work
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to spend significant time both in the office and on the manufacturing floor
- A willingness to learn and take on increasing responsibility
Assets
The following would be considered an asset, but are not required:
- Experience with Mastercam or other CAM software
- CNC programming or machining experience
- Manufacturing or fabrication experience
- Experience with quality control or inspection
- Experience with refractory, castable, ceramic, or high-temperature materials
- Previous experience creating manufacturing or shop drawings
Training & Development
We are willing to train the right candidate. You do not need to arrive with experience in refractory manufacturing or Mastercam. You will work closely with our experienced engineering and quality personnel and receive hands-on training in our products, manufacturing processes, quality systems, CAD standards, and CNC programming.
As your skills and experience develop, you will be given increasing responsibility for engineering projects, CNC programming, quality activities, and technical problem-solving.
This position is intended to provide a long-term career path within Gemcast, with the chance to grow from a junior technical role into a more advanced engineering position.
Pay: $22.00-$26.00 per hour
Expected hours: 44.0 per week
