Position Overview
The Saunameister / Aufgussmeister is responsible for creating a safe, welcoming, and exceptional thermal spa experience through the qualified operation of sauna facilities and the delivery of traditional and contemporary Aufguss rituals.
This position combines strong guest service with specialized sauna knowledge, heat management, safety awareness, and the ability to confidently lead guests through guided sauna experiences. The successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, confidence, cultural awareness, attention to detail, and a genuine passion for sauna and thermal wellness experiences.
Key Responsibilities
Leading Aufguss Rituals
- Prepare and conduct scheduled Aufguss ceremonies and other sauna rituals.
- Create a welcoming and relaxing environment for all guests of different backgrounds, abilities, and levels of sauna experience.
- Briefly explains the experience and introduces any relevant aromas or theme, applies water or prepared ice to the sauna stones, and uses towel techniques to circulate air.
- Provide clear explanations and instructions to guests before and during each ritual.
- Assist with developing new seasonal, themed, or specialty Aufguss experiences.
- Maintain a calm and professional presence, particularly during busy periods or unexpected situations.
Managing Heat, Steam and Guest Comfort
- Understand and control the distribution of heat and humidity throughout the sauna using appropriate techniques while maintaining ventilation, temperature, and operating conditions.
- Monitor guests’ signs of overheating, dizziness, distress, or other potential concerns and escalate to management immediately.
- Reinforce that guests may leave the sauna at any time if they become uncomfortable.
Aromatherapy and Sensory Experience
- Properly prepare and use approved sauna oils, infusions, water, ice, towels, fans, and other ritual materials.
- Understand appropriate products, concentrations, handling procedures, and application methods of all ritual materials.
- Music, lighting, storytelling, cultural elements, breathing exercises, sound, and carefully choreographed towel movements may be integrated into the performance.
- Adjust the intensity and delivery of an experience based on guest comfort, sauna conditions, and establish protocols.
Sauna Operations and Standards
- Ensure sauna spaces are clean, organized, safe, and properly prepared for guests.
- Monitor sauna capacity and guest activity to maintain a safe and comfortable environment.
- Conduct regular inspections of sauna areas and equipment.
- Identify and report equipment concerns, maintenance requirements, or unsafe conditions.
- Prepare, operate, monitor, and close sauna facilities in accordance with established operating procedures.
- Follow all thermal spa emergency, health, safety, and operating procedures.
- Maintain awareness of contraindications and general safety considerations associated with sauna and thermal experiences.
Guest Education and Thermal-Cycle Guidance
- Explain sauna etiquette, hydration, the purpose of cooling after heat exposure, appropriate recovery periods, and how the sauna experience fits within the Hot-Cold-Rest thermal cycle.
- Work collaboratively with all other spa departments.
- Support fellow team members during busy periods and special events.
- Participate in staff meetings and training.
Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a sauna, thermal spa, wellness facility, hospitality environment or related setting is considered an asset.
- Previous dance or theatrical arts experience is an asset.
- First Aide & CPR Certification or willingness to obtain.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Good understanding of workplace health and safety practices.
- Must be comfortable working in a hot and humid setting for extended periods.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and safely perform physical duties associated with the position.
- Minimum 19 years of age.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as required.
