Basic Function and Scope:

Reporting to the Administrator, the Director of Care (DOC) is a key member of the leadership team and is accountable for the overall leadership, management, quality and performance of nursing and personal care services within the Long-Term Care Home and Convalescent Care Unit.

The DOC provides visible, proactive and accountable leadership to the nursing department, ensuring the delivery of safe, resident-centred, high-quality care in accordance with applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, professional standards and organizational policies. The DOC is responsible for promoting a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement and professional practice while ensuring nursing operations effectively respond to the changing needs of residents and the organization.

Working collaboratively with the Administrator, Medical Director, Nurse Practitioners, nursing leadership and interdisciplinary team, the DOC provides clinical and operational leadership, identifies and responds to emerging risks and priorities, and ensures appropriate follow-through on departmental responsibilities and commitments. The DOC is expected to demonstrate sound judgement, initiative and effective decision-making and to confidently provide leadership to nursing operations during both routine and complex situations.

As a leader within the organization, the DOC builds strong relationships with residents, families, staff and external partners and contributes to organizational planning, quality improvement and regulatory readiness. The DOC must provide confident leadership and operational decision-making in the Administrator’s absence, as required.

Hours of Work:

Monday to Friday; Weekends as required; On Call as required.

Pay Rate:

$135,660-$153,000 Annually

Qualifications & Requirements





- Education

- Must hold a current unrestricted registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
- Post-Secondary degree in Health Services, Administration, Nursing or Equivalent, preferred
- Successful completion of Nursing Management/ Leadership courses, preferred

- Experience

- At least 5 years of current related experience in a Long Term Care Home
- At least 3 years of current related experience in management in Long Term Care

- Required Skills

- Demonstrated strong, visible and accountable leadership within a Long-Term Care environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Ontario LTC legislation, Ministry requirements, CNO standards and regulatory compliance.
- Strong clinical leadership, critical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, develop and hold staff accountable, including performance management and difficult conversations.
- Strong knowledge of quality improvement, risk management, IPAC, medication management and resident safety.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and ensure appropriate follow-through.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships with residents, families, staff, physicians, unions and external partners.
- Ability to analyze clinical and operational information and provide clear reports, recommendations and solutions to senior leadership.
