ABOUT TAKLA FIRST NATION:
The traditional territory of the Takla Nation is located in North Central British Columbia and totals approximately 27,250 square kilometres. The territory is a rich workplace of lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains, bordered on the west by the Skeena Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountains.
Our traditional lands are the geographic area occupied by our ancestors for community, social, economic, and spiritual purposes. Carrier and Sekani place names exist for every physical feature and place that we occupy. Each name reflects the significance of the feature or site, and today, it provides us with historical information about the rich history and extensive knowledge of our land and resources.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Health Manager provides operational leadership for Takla Nation’s Health portfolio and is responsible for the effective day-to-day management of Health department staff, the Takla Landing Clinic, Health programs, services and departmental priorities, as well as strengthening internal systems and relationships, and supporting consistent, accountable and community-responsive delivery of services.
The role works from Takla way of knowing, being and doing while supporting professional, ethical, confidential and accountable practices.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Health Manager provides formal supervision to the:
- Clinic Administrative Coordinator;
- Clinic Receptionist;
- Community Health Representative;
- Community Wellness Workers (NNADAP); and
- Other Health staff assigned by the Director.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the day-to-day operations of Health Services, ensuring programs and services are delivered effectively, efficiently and in alignment with departmental priorities.
- Promote culturally safe, community-responsive, and high-quality services that support the health and wellness needs of Takla Nation members.
- Provide supervision, coaching and performance management to support staff growth, accountability and service excellence.
- Foster a respectful, collaborative, and culturally safe workplace that supports employee wellbeing and professional development.
- Oversee health programs, the Takla Landing Clinic operations and wellness initiatives to ensure effective service delivery and positive community outcomes.
- Monitor budgets, expenditures and reporting requirements to ensure responsible stewardship of resources and funding.
- Support operational planning, policy development,
and process improvements that strengthen Health Services and organizational effectiveness.
- Lead departmental readiness activities for the new Health Centre and the implementation of supporting operational systems and resources.
- Build and maintain solid working relationships with health partners, service providers, and community organizations to enhance service coordination.
- Foster positive and respectful relationships with Takla members, families, Elders and Knowledge Holders to support community-informed service delivery.
- Ensure appropriate documentation, reporting, and accountability systems are maintained to meet organizational and funding requirements.
- Support continuous improvement by monitoring service delivery, identifying operational needs, and implementing effective solutions.
- Participate in organizational planning, leadership initiatives, training, and community engagement activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director that are consistent with the scope and purpose of the position.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Relevant post-secondary education in Health Administration, Indigenous Health, Human Services, Public Administration, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education, experience and First Nations community knowledge may be considered.
- Minimum five (5) years of progressive leadership experience in Indigenous health, community health, health administration, human services, or a related field.
- Minimum three (3) years of supervisory, management, or equivalent leadership experience.
- Demonstrated experience working with First Nations governments, communities or Indigenous organizations; experience in remote or rural First Nation communities is an asset.
- Experience with health service operations, funding agreements, quality improvement, policy development, or facility readiness is considered an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
· Proven leadership and staff supervision skills, with the ability to set expectations, delegate responsibilities, and manage performance.
· Understanding of First Nations health and wellness, governance, and the impacts of historical and ongoing trauma, or a willingness to learn.
· Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
· Strong planning, problem-solving, decision-making, and operational management abilities.
· Knowledge of budgeting, financial administration,
funding agreements, and reporting requirements.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and demonstrate professionalism in complex situations.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other records management, communication and digital systems.
· Commitment to supporting Takla Nation values, culture and community priorities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License and satisfactory Driver's Abstract.
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Emergency First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Requires a regular on-site presence in Takla Landing to support staff, programs, community engagement, and organizational priorities.
· Work in a dynamic environment that requires balancing administrative responsibilities, staff supervision, community engagement, and program oversight.
· Regular travel, as well as occasional evening and weekend work, may be required to attend meetings, training, conferences, and community events.
· Ability to occasionally lift, carry, or provide physical assistance to individuals, children, equipment, or supplies weighing 50+ lbs.
· Must maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and discretion when managing sensitive health, financial, and personnel information.
