About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate companion for a 74-year-old gentleman living at Cedarville Lodge in East Gwillimbury. He's physically mobile and independent with daily activities, but has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia and would benefit from memory prompts and gentle redirection. He recently relocated from Sharon Corners and is adjusting to his new workplace after losing touch with previous friends. He's an active individual who enjoys playing guitar (he has three electric guitars), hockey, music, and recreational activities. He values his independence and prefers male caregivers for companionship visits.
Responsibilities:
- Provide friendly companionship and social engagement
- Accompany him to recreational activities at the nearby rec center (indoor track walking, pool table at the retirement home)
- Support outings to movies or other community activities
- Offer memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed
- Engage in conversations about his interests including music, hockey, and guitars
- Light tidying and household support as needed
- Help him build current social connections in his current community
What We're Looking For:
- Male caregiver preferred (client's strong preference)
- Experience with dementia care and memory support
- Warm, patient, and engaging personality
- Ability to make the client feel comfortable and respectedStrong communication skills with both client and family
- Reliable and consistent
- Comfortable with recreational outings and active engagement
- No uniform required - visits should feel like spending time with a friend
- Transportation:
Either able to provide own vehicle for outings, or comfortable coordinating third-party transportation
Schedule:
Starting with 6 hours per week, ideally split into two 3-hour visits. Thursdays are preferred (family cannot visit that day), plus one additional day per week. Flexible scheduling between morning and early evening, with visits ending by 8:00 PM as client prefers earlier bedtimes. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (12:00-3:00 PM) are ideal but open to caregiver availability.
This role focuses on companionship and helping fill the social void left by family members who are no longer nearby. The goal is to provide consistent, friendly support while respecting his independence and preferences.
