About the Role
We are looking for a talented Anime Hero Shot Artist to join the design team on an upcoming book-based animated production. The initial engagement is for a short-form digital animated series, with the potential to lead into a planned long-form animated series based on the same property.
The production is primarily 2D Toon Boom Harmony with a stylized, cinematic and anime-influenced visual direction. This role will focus on creating fully realized key action portraits for selected dramatic "Hero Shot" moments that will become the source artwork for a moving-comic workflow.
The successful artist will work from approved character designs, environment artwork, props and other production assets supplied by the Character, Environment and Funpack teams. Using those elements as a foundation, the artist will pose, redraw and compose the required moment from the specific camera angle needed for the shot, resolving perspective, anatomy, foreshortening, scale and spatial relationships as necessary.
Each Hero Shot should read as a complete cinematic image, with strong foreground, midground and background staging, clear storytelling and dynamic action. The artist should also understand how source artwork is prepared for AI-assisted motion so that character consistency, design integrity and shot readability are preserved downstream.
What You'll Do
• Create fully realized anime-influenced Hero Shot illustrations for selected action, suspense, transformation and dramatic story moments.
• Pose approved characters into dynamic action compositions using supplied character models, expressions, costumes and relevant variants.
• Integrate approved props, location designs, key backgrounds and episodic Funpack elements into a single coherent shot.
• Redraw,
adapt or re-stage supplied design elements where required so they work convincingly from the selected camera angle and within the composition.
• Develop strong foreground, midground and background relationships that create depth, scale and clear visual focus.
• Apply strong anatomy, perspective, foreshortening, silhouette and action staging to create cinematic and readable images.
• Maintain character proportions, costume details, prop continuity and established show-design language while adapting the artwork to the needs of the Hero Shot.
• Work closely with the Director, Character Design, Environment Design and Funpack teams to resolve missing views, special poses, prop angles or other production requirements.
• Prepare clean, production-ready source artwork for downstream layering, compositing and motion treatment, separating characters, props, FX and foreground, midground and background elements where useful.
• Respond efficiently to creative notes and revisions while meeting agreed production schedules.
What We're Looking For
• Strong anime-influenced illustration, drawing and action-composition skills.
• Exceptional character posing, anatomy, gesture and expression skills.
• Strong understanding of perspective, foreshortening, camera angle, depth and cinematic composition.
• Ability to integrate pre-designed characters, props and environments into a convincing unified image.
• Ability to redraw or adapt approved production artwork while preserving the established design language and character consistency.
• Strong understanding of foreground, midground and background staging and how those elements support visual storytelling.
• Experience creating polished key art, action illustrations, animation key poses, splash art, comic-book imagery or comparable cinematic 2D artwork.
- Practical familiarity with preparing source frames for AI-assisted image-to-motion workflows, including common failure modes such as face or anatomy drift, costume distortion, texture instability and background warping.
• Ability to revise source artwork when generated motion does not hold the intended design, and to collaborate with technical/compositing staff on masks, depth, control inputs or other shot-preparation requirements.
- Professional experience in 2D animation, anime production, comics, games or comparable stylized visual-development work is considered an asset. Toon Boom Harmony, Photoshop or comparable digital drawing and painting experience is also considered an asset.
Portfolio Required
All applicants must include a link to a portfolio of relevant work in their application materials.
Please include examples demonstrating dynamic character posing, anime-influenced or cinematic action composition, perspective, foreshortening, fully realized key art and the ability to integrate characters into detailed environments.
Where team-oriented work is included, applicants should clearly identify their artistic contribution.
Contract Information The initial contract is for a short-form digital animated series. There may be an opportunity for successful team members to continue onto the planned long-form series based on the same property, depending on production requirements, performance and availability.
Rate: $1,200 - $1,400 per week
Remote applicants welcome. Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
