Position Type: Non-Voting Operational Director / Volunteer Leadership
Term: 1-year renewable term (subject to annual board review)
Reports To: Vice Chair of Operations
Collaborates With: Operations Team (People, Events), Development Team, and the Executive Board
Location: Remote (Canada-wide)
Time Commitment: 3–4 hours per week (includes biweekly syncs and monthly operational reporting)

Position OverviewWe are seeking an operational, highly collaborative Director of Communications to shape and drive our branding, media, and public engagement strategies. As a Non-Voting Director on our Operations Team, you will lead a dedicated sub-team of volunteer specialists to deliver clean, clear, and cohesive messaging across all of BECC’s internal and external channels.
This role is ideal for a strategic communicator who wants to manage digital assets, maintain brand consistency, and guide volunteer teams to amplify grassroots environmental impact across Canada.
Key Responsibilities
- Communications Strategy: Develop, manage, and execute a comprehensive internal and external communications strategy that advances BECC's mission.
- Channel & Platform Oversight: Oversee the organization's social media platforms, websites, and community newsletters.
- Brand Integrity: Maintain absolute brand consistency, tone, and visual identity standards across all active regional hubs, promotional materials, and public-facing assets.
- Cross-Functional Support: Provide communication materials,
digital frameworks, and strategic messaging assets to support fellow Directors (People, Events, Fundraising, Partnerships, and Programs).
- Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and coordinate a remote team of specialized volunteer leads (Social Media, Website, Brand, and Outreach). Collaborate with the Director of People to establish clear leadership paths and deputy structures within your team.
- Board Reporting & Governance: Track, analyze, and report communications performance, audience growth, and community engagement metrics to the Board of Directors. Attend monthly board meetings when communication priorities are on the agenda.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 2+ years of experience in communications, public relations, digital marketing, or brand management. Experience managing multi-disciplinary or volunteer teams in a remote non-profit setting is highly valued.
- Leadership & Collaboration: Strong leadership and team-building skills with a proven ability to mentor volunteers and develop organizational depth.
- Technical Savvy: General familiarity with website content management, social media coordination tools, and collaborative cloud environments (such as Google Workspace).
- Mission Alignment: A genuine commitment to sustainability, environmental advocacy, and the volunteer-driven culture of Biosphere Eco-Cities Canada.
