Director of Care (DOC) – Role Summary

Extendicare is building a pipeline of experienced healthcare leaders for future opportunities in our Long‑Term Care homes across Manitoba. This evergreen posting supports ongoing workforce planning and potential openings at any of our locations.

The DOC will lead a high‑performing care team to ensure residents receive exceptional, resident‑centered care, while maintaining regulatory compliance and fostering a positive workplace culture.

Key Responsibilities

- Cultivate – lead the resident care team, providing day‑to‑day guidance, fostering a positive work environment, and ensuring high performance and employee retention.
- Train – ensure all care staff receive the required education for effective performance and promote professional development.
- Financial Stewardship – manage the care staff complement as per the Extendicare model, support budget preparation, and conduct variance analysis.
- Comply – monitor and ensure compliance with all healthcare regulations, licensing requirements, accreditation standards, and labour and employment standards, including timely investigations and consistent action planning.
- Risk Management – identify and manage resident issues as they arise, mitigate clinical risks, and take immediate action on critical incidents in line with regulatory requirements.
- Customer Service – adopt a customer‑service mindset, respond to feedback from residents, families, vendors, and team members with acknowledgement and empathy.
- Resident Care – oversee assessment and care planning processes, ensuring personalized care plans reflect resident preferences.




- Collaborate – actively engage with the leadership team, care staff, residents, and families to deliver and optimize resident care.
- Improve – implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance resident safety, wellness, and satisfaction through relentless improvement efforts.
- Strategic Planning – develop operational plans supporting the home‑level strategic priorities, staffing, and resident care enhancement.
- Community Partnership – engage vendors on quality initiatives and collaborate with community health partners to improve resident care.
- Values Alignment – uphold and promote the organization’s mission, vision, and values, and uphold ethics, morality, and integrity.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing; Master’s degree preferred.
- Registered Nurse with current, unrestricted registration in Manitoba.
- Minimum of 5years of nursing experience, including at least 2years in a leadership role in a long‑term care or other health facility.
- Working knowledge of long‑term care regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Demonstrated expertise in leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Collaborative teamwork ability and positive relationship building.
- Track record of implementing quality improvement initiatives and achieving positive resident outcomes.
- Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and related technology.
