Position Summary The Casual Education Assistant supports the delivery of developmentally appropriate, play-based programming for children in the classroom. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team and under the direction of the Teacher and Site Manager, the role provides relief and day-to-day classroom support to promote children’s learning, development, and well-being while maintaining a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment.
Schedule
- Casual staff are called to work full or partial days during regular school hours, based on program needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Support children’s participation and development through individual, small-group, and large-group activities, with a focus on children with diverse and additional needs.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in case management and individualized planning, ensuring children’s goals are reflected across classroom programming, specialized supports, and home environments.
- Provide classroom support by preparing materials, maintaining a clean and organized environment, sanitizing equipment and toys, and supporting daily classroom routines.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment by following safety protocols and using appropriate problem-solving and conflict-resolution strategies.
- Provide relief classroom leadership when required and model appropriate procedures and practices for practicum students, volunteers, and other classroom supports.
- Respond to and follow up on critical incidents and crisis situations in collaboration with the Site Manager and appropriate team members.
- Maintain accurate program records and documentation, participate in assessments, evaluations, reports, and team meetings, and provide feedback to support program quality and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Education
- Certificate, diploma or degree in Early Learning and Child Care, Child Studies, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Disability Studies, or a related field.
Certification
- Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Level 2 or 3 certification, as applicable.
- Standard First Aid and CPR
- Trauma Informed Care
- Special Needs Assistant Certificate is considered an asset.
- SCERTS (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, and Transactional Support) training is considered an asset.
- Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) training is considered an asset.
Experience
- 1+ year of experience working with children with developmental delays, including cognitive disabilities, speech and language delays, and behavioural concerns.
- Strong knowledge and experience applying the FLIGHT Framework and learning-through-play approaches.
- Strong knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices.
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team is considered an asset.
