Position Summary
L’Arche Saint John is seeking a full-time Night Awake Assistant to join the McKim House team on a 3-month contract.
The Night Awake
Assistant provides overnight support to people with intellectual disabilities, helping to maintain a safe, welcoming, and supportive home environment throughout the night. Unlike a sleep-shift position, the Night Awake Assistant remains awake and available throughout the overnight shift to respond to the needs of core members and support the smooth operation of the home.
The successful candidate will provide respectful personal support, respond appropriately to overnight needs, complete household and administrative tasks as required, and maintain accurate documentation. This role requires a calm, attentive, responsible, and dependable individual who is comfortable working independently during overnight hours.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Remain awake and available throughout the overnight shift to provide support to core members.
- Provide respectful,
person-centred support to core members, including personal care and assistance with overnight routines.
- Monitor the home throughout the night and respond appropriately to any concerns, emergencies, or unexpected situations.
- Support medication routines and documentation in accordance with L’Arche policies and training.
- Complete overnight household tasks and maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
- Maintain accurate records, including daily logs, medication records, incident reports, and other documentation as required.
- Assistance with meal preparation in adherence to Canada Food Guide.
- Communicate relevant information to the incoming staff to ensure continuity of care.
- Follow established safety, emergency, and crisis-response procedures.
- Respect the privacy, dignity, independence, and choices of core members.
- Build positive and supportive relationships with core members based on mutual respect and dignity.
- Work collaboratively with the House Leader and other assistants.
- Participate in orientation, training, team meetings, and other organizational activities as required.
- Adhere to L’Arche policies, guidelines, values, and safety procedures.
Qualifications:
- Should be legally eligible to work in Canada.
- High school diploma or equivalent. PSW certificate or diploma in relevant field is an asset
- Fluent in spoken and written English and able to communicate effectively with team members.
- Experience supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, personal care, healthcare, or community living is an asset.
- Valid CPR & First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain.
- Valid driver's license is an asset.
- Clear Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening, and clear Social Development Record Check (processed upon hire).
- At least 19 years of age.
- Knowledge of, or openness to learning about, L’Arche history, values, and vision.
- Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently during overnight hours.
- Calm and attentive, with the ability to respond appropriately in emergency or crisis situations.
- Strong observation, communication, and documentation skills.
- Open to learning and able to give and receive feedback.
Working Conditions and Physical Workplace:
- Full-time overnight position, 35 hours per week.
- 3-month contract.
- Night-awake shifts; the successful candidate is required to remain awake and alert throughout the shift.
- Work may include weekends and holidays as part of the regular overnight schedule.
- The role involves supporting core members with personal care, household routines, and other activities as required.
- The position may involve standing, walking, lifting, assisting with mobility, and other physical tasks associated with providing support.
