Position Overview
We are seeking a reliable, organized, and compassionate Part-Time Assistant Director to support the Director in the daily operation and administration of our childcare centre.
The Assistant Director will help ensure the centre operates safely, efficiently, and in accordance with all applicable licensing and regulatory requirements. This role will provide leadership and support to educators, assist families, help coordinate daily operations, and assume responsibility for the centre when the Director is unavailable.
The ideal candidate is a positive and approachable leader who enjoys working with children, families, and staff and is comfortable balancing administrative responsibilities with hands-on support in the childcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Operations
- Assist the Director with the day-to-day operation of the childcare centre.
- Mentor, support and evaluate a team of educators.
- Maintain high standards of programing, health and safety
- Help ensure classrooms and common areas are safe, clean, organized, and welcoming.
- Support the implementation of centre policies, procedures, and routines.
- Assist with emergency preparedness and health and safety procedures.
Staff Support & Leadership
- Provide guidance and support to educators and classroom staff.
- Help ensure staff follow centre policies and appropriate childcare practices.
- Assist with staff orientation, onboarding, and training.
- Lead and mentor staff in the development and implementation of children’s programming
- Communicate staffing concerns or performance issues to the Director.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, and positive communication among staff.
- Provide leadership and direction when the Director is unavailable.
Children & Programming
- Lead and mentor staff in the development and implementation of children’s programming
- Help ensure children's individual needs are appropriately addressed.
- Monitor children's safety, well-being, and overall experience at the centre.
- Step into classrooms when additional staffing support is required.
- Assist with maintaining a positive, inclusive, and nurturing environment.
Family Relations
- Greet children and families in a warm and professional manner.
- Build positive relationships with parents and guardians.
- Respond to routine questions and concerns and refer more complex matters to the Director.
- Communicate important information to families as directed.
- Assist with resolving concerns in a respectful and professional manner.
Administration & Compliance
- Assist with maintaining accurate attendance, staff, and child records.
- Support the Director with required documentation and reports.
- Assist with licensing and regulatory compliance.
- Help prepare the Centre for inspections and reviews.
- Maintain confidentiality of children's, families', and employees' information.
- Additional duties required by management to ensure proper centre operations
- Ensure incident, accident, medication, and other required documentation is completed appropriately.
Leadership Coverage
- Act as the centre's designated leader when the Director is absent, within the scope of the position and applicable regulations.
- Handle routine operational decisions and communicate significant issues to the Director or owner.
- Ensure staff have the support and direction they need throughout the day.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and unexpected situations.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education, and with good standing with the college of ECE
- Previous experience working in a licensed childcare or early learning environment.
- Minimum 2 years of previous supervisory or leadership experience in childcare setting.
- Knowledge of early childhood development and appropriate childcare practices.
- Current Standard First Aid C certification
- Successful completion of applicable background/vulnerable-sector screening.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while also being an effective team member.

Working Conditions
This is a part-time position in an active childcare environment. The role may involve:
- Frequent interaction with children, families, and staff.
- Moving between classrooms and other areas of the centre.
- Standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting consistent with centre policies and safety requirements.
- Providing classroom coverage when needed.
- Occasional attendance at staff meetings, training, or special events.

Pay: $25.00-$32.00 per hour
