Job Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Short Range Mine Engineer specializing in Road Planning to join our mining team for a FIFO oppurtunity. In this role, you will be instrumental in designing, analyzing, and optimizing short-range mine road networks to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable operations. Your expertise will support the development of comprehensive road plans that align with operational goals, safety standards, and environmental considerations.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to apply your engineering skills in a fast-paced mining environment, contributing directly to the success of our extraction projects.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain short-range mine road plans, typically covering the next 3 months, and update them as operating conditions change.
- Design and coordinate haul roads, ramps, intersections, shovel access, dump approaches and other mine roads.
- Define road geometry, grades, widths, berms and drainage requirements in accordance with site standards and operating needs.
- Coordinate road construction, maintenance and relocation priorities with operations, equipment and construction teams.
- Review road conditions and operating feedback; identify constraints, hazards and opportunities to improve safety, reliability and haulage performance.
- Support road inspections, field checks and as-built updates, and incorporate survey and operational data into current plans.
- Assess the effects of road conditions and layout on cycle times, truck productivity, fuel use and cost per tonne or tonne-kilometre.
- Coordinate road planning with pit progression, shovel and truck movements, dump development, water management and other mine infrastructure.
- Prepare clear maps, schedules, design notes and progress updates for operational teams.
- Participate in planning meetings and provide timely field support to resolve road-related issues.
Qualifications
- Degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience in mine planning, haul road design or mine operations, preferably in an open-pit workplace.
- Strong understanding of mine road geometry, haulage requirements, drainage and field execution.
- Proficiency with mine planning and design software such as Deswik or equivalent, and experience interpreting survey and operational data.
- Ability to communicate designs clearly and work effectively with operations and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong commitment to safe work practices and practical, production-focused planning.
- Professional registration, or eligibility for registration, in Alberta is an asset.
- Oil sands or ultra-class haulage experience is an asset.
