School District 72 is looking for a Student Wellness and Homestay Advisor to join our team of professionals who strive to bring the district's learning beliefs to life.
School District 72 (Campbell River) is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, extending north to Sayward and south to Oyster River. The district also includes the outer islands of Read, Cortes, and Quadra. The district serves over 5,600 students in 18 schools with a diverse range of programs that are progressive and responsive to the educational needs and interests of students.

About The Role
Reporting to the Manager, International Student Programs, the Student Wellness and Homestay Advisor supports and promotes the overall health and wellness of international students who attend the Campbell River School District International Student Program. The Advisor offers guidance and support to students facing a variety of physical and emotional health-related challenges associated with living in an intercultural environment. Additionally, this position provides support, training, and coaching to host parents who have students residing with them.
- Works with students/homestays/agents through any health and wellness concerns/challenges, cultural differences and responds to crisis situations in a prompt and caring manner.
- Builds and maintains positive, trusting relationships with students and host families to foster open communication, collaboration, and supportive student experience.
- Facilitates monthly meetings and personal check-ins for all students at each secondary school site.
- Advocates and provides health and wellness resources for students who are struggling with physical or emotional health concerns including making referrals to third party providers when needed.
- Facilitates or helps interpret cultural practices and expectations between host parents and students.
- Provides outreach support opportunities for all students in international program with a focus on mental health, wellbeing and cultural adaption.
- Contributes to planning homestay and staff-development in the areas of wellness and mental health in a cross-cultural setting.
- Conducts regular record keeping, including ongoing service plans, incident reports, and referrals as required to fulfil program accountabilities.
- Develops and maintains recruitment of homestay families ensuring suitable facilities and caring, supportive and engaged family life.
- Conducts all screening requirements and home visits/inspections for potential homestay families.
- Processes student applications for homestay placement and matches students and families based on profiles and best fit.
- Develops and provides homestay orientations for families and international students.
- Maintains homestay family profiles, ensuring information is accurate and in accordance with applicable privacy laws.
- Develops and delivers behaviour expectations, including letters of discipline when needed.
- Gathers information and data on an ongoing basis to determine success of program, including conducting interviews/surveys with students and homestay families.
- Serve as part of a team to respond to after-hours emergencies including emergency custodial duties.
- Transports students to and from the local airport to homestay, medical appointments and other locations as necessary.
- Participates in student activities, events, and program initiatives to enhance the student experience.
- Provides support as necessary to school district initiative under the direction of the Manager, International Students Programs.
- Develops and supports promotional efforts and social media content.
Bring your Expertise
- Post-secondary education in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Child and Youth Psychology or related field.
- Five years' related experience working with children and youth in a professional capacity.
- Background in psychology and human development, early development and communication facilitation.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to navigate cross-cultural communication and conflict resolution.
- Ability to liaise with a diverse group of people including youth, school staff, and host parents from varying backgrounds.
- Training and experience using strategies related to self-regulation and mental wellness.
- Mental Health First Aid Certification or equivalent.
- Valid class 5 drivers license and own transportation is required.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality in regards to student and family information.
- Ability to interpret and apply School District 72 and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Exercises sound judgement, diplomacy, tact and discretion in a high-pressure, high-volume work environment with changing and conflicting priorities.
