About the Role We are seeking a Building Science Engineer who is passionate about the performance of existing buildings and the quality of the built environment. Reporting to the Project Director, the successful candidate will contribute to a wide range of assignments involving building envelope assessments, building pathology investigations, technical audits, asset rehabilitation initiatives, and building performance analyses.
This opportunity is intended for a professional with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in building science or a related field and who holds a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation issued by the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) .
You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, architects, technologists, and building specialists to deliver sustainable, practical, and high-performance solutions tailored to the needs of our institutional and commercial clients.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Expertise and Diagnostics
- Conduct comprehensive technical audits and building condition assessments (BCAs).
- Perform façade and parking structure inspections in accordance with Quebec's Bill 122 requirements.
- Diagnose causes of building deterioration, including water infiltration, condensation, mold growth, and structural cracking.
- Assess the condition of roofing systems, curtain walls, masonry assemblies, glazing systems, and related building envelope components.
- Conduct and/or supervise on-site performance testing, including blower door testing, infrared thermography, ASTM water penetration testing, and related investigations.
- Prepare reserve fund studies and maintenance logs in accordance with Bill 16 requirements.
Expert Witness and Litigation Support
- When required, serve as a technical expert in matters involving construction deficiencies, water infiltration issues, or building-related disputes.
Rehabilitation Design and Engineering
- Design rehabilitation and restoration solutions for building envelope systems, including roofing, curtain walls, masonry, windows, and glazing systems.
- Prepare plans and specifications for rehabilitation projects involving roofing, fenestration, parking structures, masonry repairs, and related building systems.
- Develop technical details, construction sections, and performance specifications in accordance with DDN standards.
- Perform hygrothermal simulations (WUFI) and thermal bridge analyses (THERM) to mitigate risks of mold growth and premature building degradation.
- Review plans and specifications for new construction projects as part of the building envelope commissioning process to ensure continuity of air and water barrier systems.
- Provide recommendations regarding material and product selection (membranes, insulation systems, façade assemblies, etc.) with consideration for durability, sustainability, and energy efficiency.
Advisory Services and Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the Quebec Construction Code and National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) requirements.
- Support clients in obtaining environmental and sustainability certifications such as LEED, Passive House, and Zero Carbon Building certifications.
- Act as a technical advisor or consultant in matters involving litigation, construction deficiencies, or latent defects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Building Engineering, Construction Engineering, or another relevant discipline.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) and member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ).
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in building science.
- Demonstrated experience in building envelope systems, rehabilitation projects, technical investigations, and building pathology assessments.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and technical report writing abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites throughout the Greater Montreal Area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience conducting reserve fund studies and property condition assessments.
- Knowledge of building envelope performance testing methodologies.
- Experience in thermography, blower door testing, or hygrothermal modeling.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary projects.
- Advanced proficiency with modeling and simulation software, including WUFI, THERM, and HOT2000, is considered a strong asset.
- Strong team-oriented approach, with the ability to collaborate effectively with structural, mechanical, electrical, and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Excellent listening skills and the ability to understand client needs before recommending technical solutions.
- Demonstrated autonomy and proactive decision-making skills, particularly when addressing unforeseen construction-site challenges.
- Exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities, with the capacity to translate complex technical issues into practical, client-focused solutions.
