Personal Support Worker - Clarkson, Mississauga - CAD$405.00/week

Description

About the Client:

We're seeking a compassionate companion for an 86-year-old woman living in independent living in Clarkson, Mississauga. She has progressing dementia that is still in early-to-moderate stages- she recognizes people and can handle most daily tasks independently. She also experiences anxiety and mental health concerns that are exacerbated by her cognitive changes. When she forgets something, her anxiety increases and fears begin to surface. She lives in a facility where meals are provided and medications are distributed by nursing staff. She dresses herself (though not always in matching clothes) and manages her own toileting and personal hygiene. What she needs most is companionship and a calming presence to help reduce her loneliness and anxiety.

Responsibilities:

This is a companion role focused on emotional support and engagement. You'll spend quality time with her during afternoon visits—taking her for walks, playing card games, encouraging her to participate in building activities, and providing gentle redirection when needed. There is no meal preparation, no personal care assistance, and no medication management required. Light tidying may be helpful but is not the primary focus. Occasionally, you may drive her for errands or appointments. The goal is to provide consistent, reassuring companionship that helps her feel less isolated and more engaged.

What We're Looking For:

We need someone who makes her feel comfortable and safe, is calm and patient, brings positive energy, and is reliable and consistent.

You should take initiative when appropriate and communicate clearly with the family (six adult children who are coordinating care). Experience with dementia and cognitive support—particularly memory prompts and redirection is essential. A valid driver's license is required for occasional outings. You should be comfortable working independently in a senior living environment and understand how to manage anxiety and fear responses in someone with dementia.

Schedule:

We're looking for a few afternoon visits each week (approximately 3 days per week for a few hours each visit) to start. At the end of summer, there will be a two-week period where we'll need extended coverage with eight-hour daily shifts while family members are away for a wedding in Calgary. Flexibility during this period is significant.
