Position Summary
The Family Decision-Making Facilitator plans, convenes, and facilitates Family Circles (wrap-around circles) for Moose Cree First Nation children, youth, and families. Grounded in Moose Cree culture, traditional teachings and restorative practice, the Facilitator creates a safe, respectful, and neutral space where every voice – especially the child’s – is heard and guides the family and its supports to agree on a plan with clear goals, tasks, and responsibilities. The Facilitator works closely with the Band Representative Team and the Prevention Team, holds follow-up circles until each family’s wrap-around supports are in place, and records circle outcomes in a way that protects family privacy.
The role calls for solid facilitation and mediation skills, cultural grounding, impartiality and sound judgement about child safety.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Diploma in Social Services, Indigenous Studies or a related field.
- Recognized and respected by their own community as having lived experience and a learned understanding of Indigenous culture and traditional teachings and carrying themselves according to those teachings.
- Training in circle facilitation, mediation, restorative practice or Alternative Dispute Resolution is preferred.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience working with children and families.
- Demonstrated experience facilitating circles or groups and mediating between family members in a positive way.
- Experience working with Elders,
healers and other cultural resources.
- Experience in child welfare, prevention or family support services is an asset.
- Circle and group facilitation and Alternative Dispute Resolution processes, including the logistics of large circles.
- Moose Cree First Nation’s child and family law and its service delivery model (available from Moose Cree First Nation or on the Government of Canada website).
- An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families; Ontario’s Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017; and child welfare case management.
- Indigenous culture, values and protocols, and the impact of residential schools, the Sixties Scoop and the child welfare system on First Nations families.
- Community services in Moose Factory and the surrounding area.
- Problem-solving, conflict resolution and mediation skills, with the ability to stay impartial.
- Clear, concise and accurate written and verbal communication; able to develop and deliver training to small and large groups.
- Organization, time management and attention to detail; able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and data or case management systems, and adaptability to new systems.
- Ability to speak Cree is an asset.
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector check or proof to obtain one.
Duration: Permanent with 3 months probation
