Step into a dynamic and highly specialized role where your expertise directly shapes surgical outcomes and patient experiences. As a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), you will deliver enhanced perioperative nursing care within the operating room. You will work in close collaboration with surgeons and the perioperative team, assisting within the RNFA scope of practice and supporting patients throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care.

Responsibilities will be in accordance with Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) guidelines and organizational policies. This role emphasizes evidence-based practice, quality improvement, patient advocacy, and continuity of care in a fast-paced, technologically evolving workplace. Your ability to adapt, think critically, and make sound clinical decisions will be essential to delivering safe, high-quality care.

Professional Development Chance

Candidates who are not yet RNFA-certified are encouraged to apply if they have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing at least five years of current operating room experience, including intraoperative experience, and meet the RNFA Program admission requirements set by the National Institute of First Assisting (NIFA).The program is full-time and approximately 6 months in duration; timelines may vary based on service delivery, location, Canadian Nursing Association examination schedules and individual learner progression. Travel may be required.

The Registered

Nurse (RN) participates in nursing assessments and interventions, care planning, implementing prescribed treatments, administering medications, evaluating treatments, and monitoring/documenting treatment progress and patient/resident response. Acting as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the patient/resident,



the RN identifies needs and sets priorities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The RN facilitates patient/resident and family education and discharge planning, and may be required to act in a charge nurse capacity.

The RN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health.

Classification: Registered Nurse Unit and Program: Med Obs Surg Pall BHC Bonnyville Health Centre Multi-Site: At (UNA only) Temporary Employee Class: Temp F/T Benefits Temporary End Date: 18-APR-2028 Length of Shift in weeks: 12 Shifts per cycle: 40 Days Off: As Per Rotation Classification: Registered Nurse Unit and Program: Med Obs Surg Pall BHC Bonnyville Health Centre Multi-Site: At (UNA only) Temporary Employee Class: Temp F/T Benefits Temporary End Date: 18-APR-2028 Hours per Shift: 11.08 Length of Shift in weeks: 12 Shifts per cycle: 40 Shift Pattern: Days, Evenings, Nights, Weekends, On Call Days Off: As Per Rotation Required Qualifications: Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required.Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) required.Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses are also required:1) CRNA Medication Administration Certificate - NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification - Additional Required Qualifications:



Candidates must possess a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, completion of an accredited RNFA program, and a minimum of five (5) years of perioperative nursing experience. The role requires adaptability in a fast-paced surgical setting, effective time management, and the ability to stand scrubbed for extended periods while wearing personal protective equipment, including but not limited to apron radiographic protection, to safely support the surgical team. Candidates applying for the Professional Development Opportunity must meet the required qualifications listed above and the RNFA Program admission requirements set by the National Institute of First Assisting (NIFA).

Preferred Qualifications: Canadian Nurses Association certification in Perioperative Nursing, CPN(C).

Experience leading or supporting change initiatives, quality improvement, participating in clinical research or advancing evidence-informed practice.
