BC Hydro is located at Terrace DO. The chosen applicant will be required to join and begin their duties as soon as possible. This is a temporary full time position.

Employer Name : BC Hydro Temporary, Full-time The candidate will work under the supervision of a registered professional to prepare terms of reference, budget estimates, and related analytical and other research reports for portions of fish- and wildlife-related research programs and projects, determine project approach and objectives, parameters, costs, and staff requirements, and establish priorities. The candidate will review and evaluate consultants and recommend their selection, then review their reports to determine technical acceptability. The candidate will be responsible for preparing and implementing work plans and schedules for portions of programs designed to mitigate and/or compensate for the impacts of new and existing BC Hydro facilities, construction, operations, and maintenance activities on wildlife, fish, aquatic, and natural ecosystems.

The candidate will inspect, monitor, and administer projects, including contract administration. The candidate will be responsible for conducting field reviews and inspections of construction, operations, maintenance, and waste management/pollution prevention systems activities and monitoring compliance with environmental permits and BC Hydro’s best management practices. The candidate may provide technical direction to field personnel in sampling techniques, prepare and ensure that contingency and closure plans remain valid, and review documentation, terms of references, standards, guidelines, and summaries of requirements for technical content to ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, environmental, and safety legislation.

The candidate will be responsible for participating in environmental reviews of operating facilities to identify potential environmental impacts and appropriate mitigation methods. The candidate will make recommendations in accordance with established protocols related to facility upgrades and mitigating the impacts of BC Hydro’s operations. The candidate will be responsible for providing technical advice and guidance under the supervision of a registered professional to ensure environmental issues, objectives, and strategies are considered and incorporated into operational plans.





The candidate will work under the supervision of a registered professional to provide biological and/or scientific information at public meetings, license hearings, and to program or environmental groups. The candidate will provide technical advice and instructions to field personnel in the event of emergency environmental problems and may seek guidance from a registered professional. The candidate will be responsible for responding to unforeseen environmental concerns in the field, coordinating response teams and routine external reporting, and participating in incident investigations as required.

The candidate must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Geoscience, or a relevant field, along with two (2) years of relevant work experience. The candidate must have a Technologist Diploma in Science and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience. The candidate must be eligible for a professional designation or registered in the “in Training” category with a regulatory body governed by the BC Professional Governance Act.

The candidate must hold a valid class five (5) driver’s licence. The candidate must have significant working knowledge of provincial and federal legislation, acts, and policies related to water, fisheries, wildlife, and other natural resources. The candidate must have significant knowledge of contaminated sites, waste management, environmentally hazardous material handling, storage, and disposal methods.

The candidate must have significant knowledge of fish and wildlife biology and habitat assessment practices. The candidate must have significant knowledge of wildlife, fish, aquatic, and natural ecosystems, including resident fish populations. The candidate must have significant knowledge of assessing and managing the environmental effects of maintenance, operations, and construction activities.





The candidate must have significant knowledge of safety issues related to field work in utility operations and construction environments. The candidate must have significant oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports. The candidate must have significant interpersonal skills and the ability to establish strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, the public, regulatory agencies, and Indigenous communities.

The candidate must have significant organizational, planning, budgeting, and work scheduling skills. The candidate will be required to demonstrate significant computer skills in using data capture and analysis tools, along with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and Excel. The candidate must have significant knowledge of contract administration processes.

The candidate must be able to adhere to BC Hydro procedures and project management practices. The candidate will be required to operate a boat for certain positions as needed. The candidate will be required to successfully complete pre-employment alcohol and drug testing as a condition of employment for this safety-sensitive position.

The candidate will be required to travel frequently along the NCTL as part of the position requirements. The candidate must be able to work scheduled shifts, with shift details discussed during the interview process. The candidate will be required to travel frequently to remote areas, where the candidate may operate boats, snowmobiles, ATVs, and 4X4 trucks on rough access roads to conduct field work and may participate in helicopter-based surveys.

The candidate will be required to perform field work and work at construction and operational sites with frequent exposure to all weather conditions and no shelter. The candidate will also regularly work around water, including rivers and reservoirs, during field work. The candidate will be required to regularly hike and climb across rough terrain while carrying field equipment of moderate weight.

The candidate will be eligible for a minimum of 15 paid vacation days annually. The candidate will receive a lifetime pension benefit. The candidate will be eligible for a flexible work arrangement based on role requirements.
